2018 Annual Report • Fire Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

33 | P a g e

There’s a small hole in the ceiling that the fire burned through, but someone had sprayed water
up there, so the fire should be out, right?
You reach for the TIC still attached to your hip and point it up to the ceiling to reveal a strong
heat source in the ceiling. The overhaul crew (clean-up/demolition crew) comes in, pulls down
the small section of ceiling that you’ve identified to be hot, and hot embers come raining down.
They’re quickly extinguished and now you know the fire is entirely out. This was a small
amount of necessary damage to prevent a second fire. There are spaces between walls, ceilings,
and floors that used to make it difficult to confirm a true “fire out” status. The TIC allows
firefighters an alternate to pulling apart the entire ceiling and floor above to find where that
smoke was coming from. In two separate instances in this scenario, a life was saved and
extensive damage due to overhaul was prevented.

Figure 1 Our Bullard Thermal Imager identifies a training dummy lying in a dark room
