ST. ANTHONY
February 26, 1999
St. Anthony City Council
3301 Silver Lake Road
St. Anthony, MN 55418
Dear Honorable Members of the St. Anthony City Council:
`/
The St. Anthony `Sports respectfully submit thelon folloprovides
wing request to the City of St. Anthonicipation in various y:
*The for
the youth of
our community. P Y
*The City purchase, rent, or lease additional land to facilitate the need of the outdoor youth and
adult programs. Possible sources may include the former New Market Food Market area and the
abandoned ball fields behind Unisys adjacent to Gross Golf Course.
St. Anthony outdoor sports consist of:
*Pre t -ball, t -ball, coaches pitch baseball, in-house baseball, in-house,in-house fall soccer, traveling fall
softball, fast -pitch softball,
traveling baseball, in-house summer soccer, traveling summer soccer,
soccer, football, adult softball, and high school sports such as football, baseball, soccer, and softball.
*Youth participation numbers consist of 78 teams involving 1,240 players.
*High School and Middle School participation includes 15 teams with plans to add more.
*Adult softball includes 18-20 teams.
Summary:
While we have the availability of some parks, the number of fields do not provide the space necessary to
accommodate the growing number of participants in our youth programs. An increasing number of sport
participants are concentrating on one sport and are requiring the use of facilities the year around.
Therefore, in addition to acquiring land, it would be beneficial to weigh the possibility of constructing a
fieldhouse which could house all sports all year round. Our goal is to be proactive and build for the
future. We are experiencing a time when younger families are moving into the city. We have heard from
the students of St. Anthony that they need a place to feel comfortable within the city. We have heard
from the parents who want a safe place for their children to socialize. We believe it necessary that the
City consider these requests and act upon them, all the while continuing to build assets within our own
community.
The surrounding communities have been kind in offering use of their space but this is limited and often
requires that practices be held at very inconvenient days and times. An area within our own community
would be well used and would enhance the quality of activities in our city.
We appreciate your consideration of this request. _
Sincerely,f"`
St. Anthony Sports Boosters
Jan Jenson n ,Bonnie Brever
Parks Commission Liaison
r. ` / President
3301 SILVER LAKE ROAD • ST. ANTHONY, MINNESOTA 55418
