Updates <br />New Fire Code goes into effect 3/31/2020. 2020 MN State Fire Code <br />Based on 2018 International Fire Code <br />Staff will be trained and there are no major changes noted at this time <br />Public Education in Schools <br />Going Well. –Our goal is to visit every grade at least once through grade 5. <br />Also do CPR for the 7th and 9th Grades <br />State fire deaths to date in 2019 = 26 <br />2018 –37 –2nd lowest since 1982 (35 in 2009) <br />2017 –68 –Highest total since 1995 –multiple deaths <br />45 year trend (1970) –steady decline from around 100 deaths a year to around 40 <br />Careless smoking remains biggest cause of fire deaths <br />Home Safety Surveys <br />Started in 2016 <br />By Appointment –30 to 45 minutes <br />Quick home safety survey –Fires, CO, Slips and Falls <br />Check smoke alarms for date and function <br />7 to 10 year life span on smoke alarms <br />Install up to three 10 year smoke alarms –no battery changes, end of life signal <br />Does not apply to rental living spaces i.e. apartments <br />Partnership with the American Red Cross for smoke detectors <br />Check CO alarm for date and function <br />Importance of having working CO detectors –Call at group home
