2019 Annual Report • Police Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

36 | Page

XII. Dare Summary
PREPARED BY OFFICER JONATHAN SCHLINGMAN
St Anthony Police Department has continued its tradition of partnering with the St Anthony
School District and St Charles Borromeo School by bringing an officer into the schools to
instruct Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) lessons. Each lesson is tailored to a certain
topic for the week and continues for approximately 10 weeks. DARE is a prevention and
education program that advocates and educates safe and healthy lifestyles and gives the tools to
enable the students to resist engaging in negative behaviors.
Officer Schlingman concluded his 6th year of instructing DARE to the 5th grade students at
Wilshire Park Elementary and St. Charles Borromeo School. Officer Schlingman also instructed
4 lessons to the 8th grade students at St. Charles Borromeo School.
The 5th Grade students were led in discussions on topics such as; responsibility, decision
making, drug information (tobacco and alcohol), risks and consequences, peer pressure, and
stress. Communication is also a key lesson in DARE. The students learn how to communicate
with confidence, both verbal and nonverbal . Each student is required to write an essay about
their experience in DARE class and the winner from each class is provided with a gift. The
DARE year concludes with a graduation ceremony/party to recognize the students for their
hard work over the course of DARE.
Due to a change in curriculum for the health class at the St Anthony Middle School, 8th grade
DARE was not taught. In lieu of Officer Schlingman being in the class room, he spent additional
time as the part time School Resource Officer at the St Anthony Middle/High School. Officer
Schlingman partners with school officials, teachers, students, and parents to assist in solving
problems and to help build relationships and trust between each other.
DARE continues to be a vital component to positive interaction between the police department
and the young people in our community.
