MEMORANDUM

To: St. Anthony Village Mayor and City Council
Mark Casey, City Manager
From: Stephen Grittman, City Planner

Date: City Council Regular Meeting; July 28, 2020

NAC Project No. 323.01 – 20.10
Request: Request to keep four (4) chickens in an R-1 Zoning District

Location: 3629 Coolidge Street NE

DISCUSSION AND STAFF RECOMMENDATION
Staff has received an inquiry from the Applicant owners dated July 7, 2020 requesting a permit to keep
four female chickens at their residential property at the above address. The property is zoned R-1, Single
Family Residential, and is surrounded primarily by single family neighborhood in all directions.
The Applicants have provided a diagram
of the property showing the location and
dimensions of the chicken coop in
relation to their property. The location is
approximately 6 feet from the rear (east)
property line and 8 feet from the side
(south) boundary. The structure consists
of a fenced-in run with the coop structure
above. The run area is proposed to be 6
feet wide by 15 feet long. The application
does not specify overall height of the
coop. The coop structure itself appears to
be 4 feet in height, and would appear to
be approximately 7-8 feet in height above
ground overall.
According to aerial photography, the
chicken coop appears to be shielded from
neighboring views by existing tree and
shrub cover. For accessory buildings, a setback requirement from adjoining side and rear lot lines is 5
feet. As noted above, the applicants propose setbacks of 6 and 8 feet.

27
