The closestdocumented Dakota settlement was on Long Lake (MdeWakanton) inArden Hills and located within the Rice Creek (Otunwe Wakpadan)corridor of lakes and streams which was used by the indigenous people asa short cut between the Mississippi and St Croix Rivers. The area wasvisited annually to harvest the abundant wild rice.Owamni yomni or “whirlpool” is the name used by the Dakota for the fallsof the Mississippi which had strong spiritual value.First European visitors were French explorers, traders and clergy.
