A rural schoolhouse, gas station,tavern and grocery store were built and operated withinthe “fiercely independent” village.Greenhouses became part of the life as early as 1916 whenJohn Johnson, Sr. built their first tiny greenhouse. LeoHertog, a Dutch immigrant worked at the Lemkegreenhouse in the ‘20s and opened his own in 1932.St Charles Borromeo Church and School opened in 1939,the convent was opened in 1946.
