St Anthony Village e--75th Anniversary Anthony Villagee 77Continued Growth 75th7h hh-Anniversah 5th-the 1970sEquinox Apartments built on the northern portion of the ApachePlaza site as the demand for housing in St Anthony continued.St Anthony Civic Orchestra started in August, 1975.1976 SA Village High School Marching Band took first place at theLions International Band Competition in Honolulu Hawaii andmarched down Disneyland’s Main Street.New companies moved into St Anthony including Happy PotatoChips, St Anthony Millwork, Tracy Printing.1977 First woman mayor elected, council member Sally Haik.1979 Apache Plaza lost one of its major tenants, MontgomeryWard.St Anthony Village e--75th Anniversaryt Anthony Villagee 75th77Siege and Recovery 5thyy-Anniversar A5thy y-The 1980sGypsy moths invaded in the fall of 1983.Small amounts of trichloroethylene (TCE)were discovered in the municipal water system in early1983, triggering a six year struggle to discover the source and to sue the Army, the US Departmentof Justice, the Department of Defense, Honeywell and the Federal Cartridge Corporation formitigation of the environmental pollution of the ground water and aquifers winning a settlementin March of 1989.Apache Plaza and a swath of St Anthony was hit by an F3 tornado April 26, 1984 with estimatedwinds of 150 to 200 mph resulting in massive destruction to homes and businesses over an area aquarter mile wide and two miles long with 1 fatality and 46 hospital treated victims. Two localgreenhouses were destroyed and many businesses never recovered as the damage to ApachePlaza hastened its demise.Kenzington of St Anthony senior housing project, the first 5 story project in the Village opened inApril, 1986 after a two year struggle to acquire financing.Chandler Place, an apartment complex for seniors was developed by the owners of the St Anthony Health Center and opened in 1986.Phase 3 of the Kenzie Redevelopment project got underway in April, 1987 resulting in Autumn Woods, two 3-story buildings with 200 rental units, half ofthem designatedfor seniors.Parkview school building sold to the village for $1 after city agreed to allow Community Services to stay there free for 5 years.7
