Parks and Environmental Commission Regular Meeting Minutes
December 7, 2020
Page 7
City Hall campus as there are lights. Mr. Geller explained how he got into playing pickle ball
with his family. It’s a multi-generational inexpensive sport.

Any other aspects of the replacement the City Council should consider?

Photographs of the current court conditions were provided for Commission review as well as
a project bid.

Councilmember Walker asked Mr. Gumke to forward the information from Mr. Geller to the
Commission and him. Mr. Geller is in the hopes of organizing a pickle ball tournament in the
future. Commissioner Niemi asked if there would be some negative feedback at the culver
courts if it were designated only for pickle ball.

Mr. Yunker stated the funding is at the discretion of the Council. The reason the Council had
asked for input on pickle ball is whether the City needs to look at finding a funding source to
do the project a year early. Commissioner Niemi asked how long that would take and Mr.
Yunker stated currently its slated in 2022 for replacement and Council will determine if there
is a need to adjust to find a way to do it in 2021.

Chair Bellinger stated she is unsure as to whether enough research has been done.
Commissioner Guest stated there are still some unanswered questions as to the needs of the
tennis players in the community. Chair Bellinger stated it would be more prudent to determine
which courts should be looked at. Commissioner Niemi suggested the culver court be solely
pickle ball. Commissioner Reed stated she would have concerns as it would be nice for kids to
be able to walk to play tennis in that neighborhood. She would like to see some pickle ball
courts at Central Park.

Mr. Yunker asked if based on the condition of the courts is it desired to move this up to 2021.
It would not be cost effective to stripe the courts and then tear it up for resurfacing. Mr. Geller
stated to take the courts out of commission during the nice months when the pandemic is still
present, would be disappointing. Commissioner Niemi suggested the work be moved up a
year to make the courts ready sooner.

Ms. Palmer asked if the Central Park tennis courts resurfacing is included in the discussion of
moving resurfacing up to 2021. Commissioner Niemi stated that is his understanding. Ms.
Palmer stated for safety issues it would be a prudent thing to do. Commissioner Reed agreed if
there are safety issues it should be moved up. Chair Bellinger asked if weather is a factor and
Mr. Gumke stated late winter early spring would be a good time to do the work.
Commissioner Guest suggest the Commission gather all the information and use the money
instead for striping bike or pedestrian paths. Commissioner Niemi stated the more this is
discussed the further the work will be pushed out and contractors need to be scheduled. Chair
Bellinger stated more information is needed. Commissioner Niemi asked if the striping for
pickle ball could be added to the contract for the re-surfacing. The consensus of the
Commission is to move the re-surfacing to 2021 if a funding source can be found. There is a
large demand for pickle ball and the striping of the courts will be later discussed.
