1
Charlie Yunker
From:Barbara Gottfried <bgott3joy@gmail.com>
Sent:Wednesday, March 3, 2021 8:38 PM
To:Randy Stille; Wendy Webster; Bernard Walker; Tom Randle; Jan Jenson; Charlie Yunker;
*SAPlanner
Subject:Idling cars and exhaust fumes at a proposed car wash
Caution: This email originated outside our organization; please use caution.

Dear Mayor, City Council Members, Charlie Yunker, and Steve Grittman,

Two vulnerable populations are living in the immediate vicinity of the proposed car wash: seniors at the
Kenzington, and growing children in single family homes.

Seniors: Many seniors are already living with chronic illnesses: heart disease, lung disease, cancer, diabetes.

Growing children: There is increasing awareness of the negative health impacts of idling cars on school
children. St Anthony has a "Young Lungs At Work" initiative in response.

Our previous emails submitted to SAV city officials, and general public knowledge, point to the reality that
exhaust fumes from idling cars damage our health.

A car wash right next to our homes would expose our vulnerable seniors, growing children, and other residents
to more than 100 harmful compounds in idling car exhaust (see article excerpted below). This would occur all
day, every day.

Mayor and City Council, I'm simply asking you to follow the pertinent city code and deny the CUP. Protect our
neighborhood from harm! Be contributors to our health!

Barbara Gottfried
Kenzington Condominiums

MPCA website feature story, September 2012:
"Do you know that exhaust from an idling engine contains more pollutants than that from moving cars?
Vehicles are a major contributor to poor air quality in urban areas; the list of harmful ingredients in car exhaust
runs to more than 100 compounds. Studies have linked pollution from vehicles to increased rates of cancer,
heart and lung disease, asthma, and allergies. And the impact is greatest on kids – children breathe more rapidly
and inhale more pollutants per pound of body weight than adults, and their lungs are still developing."
https://www.pca.state.mn.us/featured/no-idling-please-young-lungs-work

141
