2020 Annual Report • Fire Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

14 | Page

STATISTICS/TRENDS
This section include s trends and reports nation-wide and at the state level.
• The Fires in MN report for 2020 is not out yet but here are some information I received
from the State Fire Marshal.
o 2020 preliminary fire deaths are at 53, an increase of 13% over 2019. 2019 – 47,
2018 - 37, 2017 - 68. The number of deaths shows a gradual increase over 10
years on average. This is countered by a sharp decline in fire death rate which is
based on number of deaths per 100,000 people. Simply put as populations rise
there will be more fire incidents.
o Of fatalities in 2020, 68% were ages 50 and older – number was 67% in 2019.
o Smoking continues to be proportionally the largest cause of fire deaths identified
at 7 deaths in 2020 attributed to smoking. This number could rise as more fire
causes are determined by investigators. Unfortunately the cause of some fires
cannot be determined with certainty.
• Highlights from 2019 Fires in Minnesota Report from the State Fire Marshal’s Office
o In 31% of the fatal fires there was either no smoke alarm or it was not working.
This number could be higher as in some cases it is impossible to determine if the
smoke alarm was working after the damage done by a fire.
o Cooking remains the leading cause of structure fires, careless smoking the cause
of most fire fatalities.
o Single family dwellings continue to have the most structure fires and fire
fatalities.
o Number of structure fires and total dollar loss is similar to past years.
o Overall fire department responses are up mainly for medical responses.
Structure and vehicle fires saw smaller increases.
o Dollar loss due to fire was up 21% to 278 Million for the state. St. Anthony had a
higher than normal year with 3 major fires in 2019.
o There were 95 “sprinkler saves” recorded with the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
This is an incident where the activation of a sprinkler prevented the potential loss
of life or property. One of these was in St. Anthony.
