2020 Annual Report • Fire Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

29 | Page

We are now about a month in of rookie training and making progress each day that we train
with them. We continue our training moving into some basic first aid and working with our
small tools. Small tools consist of our gas engine tools anywhere from a blower to a chainsaw.
We make sure each is comfortable being able to operate each tool and show them basic
maintenance and care of each. To keep moving on we start to transition into driving the fire
trucks. There is a dash panel test for each and on the road driving test as well. We focus on
unique design of each apparatus and where all the switches and buttons are and what exactly
they do. Everyone on the department is expected to know how to drive each apparatus and
know how to pump with it. This is something we do as you never know who will be available
for a call and having everyone trained in driving and pumping helps out.
Over the last few years we have worked with Ramsey County Chiefs and have been sending
our rookies to firefighter classes through them. This has helped out tremendously as the rookies
get more one on one time with instructors and are not interrupted if crews at the station need to
respond to a call. Throughout their time in firefighter class they will learn various skills. Some
of them include:
• Building Construction
• Fire Behavior
• Ladders
• Search and Rescue
• Salvage and Overhaul
• Hazardous Materials
• Vehicle Extrication
• Ropes and Knots
These are only a few things they will learn over a five month period. In the
fire service we are expected to know and do a lot of things. That is why we
continually train and practice our skills.
While they are continue with firefighter classes we continue to work on what
they learn in class and apply it to our equipment at the station. This not only
helps them with the skills but allows them to get used to working with what
we have at our department. Each will be finishing up with driving and
working on city maps and addresses as well. This leads us into pumping. Pumping can be very
hard for some and very easy for others. It is a vital skill within our training. We go around town
hooking up to hydrants and spraying water practicing with different hand lines and nozzles.
