We also implemented testing for our employees. I reached out to HCMC and with a guarantee of results in 24 hours or less, we were able to develop some testing guidelines here in-house in order to make a fast determination if we had an employee that was positive. Keep in mind that this was for all employees of the city and not just fire. Each department head wanted to maintain a continuous service level for our residents and by being able to test and get it done quickly, we were able to isolate and prevent additional spread among employees. Lastly was the vaccination of our firefighters. As I am writing this, 88% of the department has been vaccinated. Some folks who had COVID made the decision to hold off and possibly get the vaccine down the road. Either way, we have come a long way in 1 year and I am so very proud of the men and women of this department. They listened and trusted in our SOG’s, our information and our plan. They never wavered one bit during this pandemic. In fact I would say that they doubled down on their efforts to make sure that when there was a need here in the city, that we had folks on the trucks to answer that call. 2020 was filled with a lot of challenges that we as a department were tasked with handling. This is no different than any year that we have faced. Yes, this was a bit more challenging in some ways but we did what we were trained to do and that is to adapt and overcome. Personally I am happy that there is light for the ending of this pandemic as it will bring some “normalcy” back into our lives. We all worked so very hard to get through this and to get back to having some stability and good news. With that I respectfully submit the Fire Department 2020 Annual Report.
