Bremer Financial Corporation
Project B2008939
November 17, 2020
Page 10

perform a subcut of 1 to 3 feet below the pavement and then remove or recompact the excavated soils.
More commonly, the contractor removes the pavement and then surface compacts and proofrolls the
exposed soils to identify weak spots in the subgrade. The contractor then corrects any identified weak
areas.

C.2. Site Grading and Subgrade Preparation

C.2.a. Building Subgrade Excavations: Option A – Standard Soil Correction
We recommend removing unsuitable materials from within the building pad and oversizing areas . We
define unsuitable materials as existing fill, frozen materials, organic soils, existing structures, existing
utilities and associated backfill, vegetation and soft/very loose soils. Table 4 shows the anticipated
excavation depths and bottom of excavation elevations for each of the borings in relation to the assumed
finished floor elevation (FFE) of the building.

Table 4. Portions of the excavations may also extend deeper
than indicated by the borings. A geotechnical representative should observe the excavations to make the
necessary field judgments regarding the suitability of the exposed soils.

The contractor should use equipment and techniques to minimize soil disturbance. If soils in the
excavation bottoms become disturbed or are wet, we recommend excavation, replacement and
recompaction.
