City Council Joint Town Hall Meeting Minutes
April 18, 2024
Page 8
1 done publicly. It means a lot to him to have an engaged community. He thanked everyone for
2 participating in this process. If Falcon Heights is included, they will do their best to be good
3 partners. Falcon Heights has explored some of the problems identified and thought about them
4 long and hard. He stated they will continue to do that in a transparent way.
5
6 Councilmember Wassenberg stated as a relatively new councilmember, this process has been
7 very informative and educational. He thanked St. Anthony for hosting the meetings. He agrees
8 this needs to be win-win-win and feels this is possible with some work.
9
10 Councilmember Mielke thanked all for their comments.
11
12 Councilmember Meyer stated he is happy to see folks participating in this process. He agrees it
13 needs to be a win-win-win.
14
15 Councilmember Leehy stated she has been on the Council since 2018. Before that, she served on
16 the Community Engagement Committee. She is very passionate about serving in the community
17 where she lives. When Philando was killed she told the City that we need to get this right. She
18 has seen the majority of people wanting to get this right. She thanked everyone for their
19 participation. She has friends on the SAPD. The entire process gives us an opportunity to renew
20 an agreement but not as it was before and restore relationships and rebuild communication. It
21 takes time. She believes there can be a win-win-win. When contract was first drafted, that
22 decision was made for the residents she believes.
23
24 Mayor Webster wanted to acknowledge this was a difficult ask from the Falcon Heights Council
25 to explore this possible partnership. In the first joint meeting she experienced a heaviness in the
26 room with both Council’s carrying the legacy of tragedy from the shooting. She appreciates
27 Falcon Heights in aligning with St. Anthony’s values gaining input from all. It is important to
28 rebuild those connections between communities regardless of what happens. She appreciates the
29 level of engagement from the community members. It is clear we care deeply for our police
30 department and know the officers by their first names, we know their families. We take that care
31 and responsibility seriously. She thanked the Falcon Heights community for their comments
32 during these sessions. There were two different narratives. Both communities are looking for the
33 same high level of policing SAPD provides to St. Anthony.
34
35 X. ADJOURNMENT.
36
37 Motion by Councilmember Stephens, seconded by Councilmember Doolan, to adjourn the
38 meeting at 7:40 p.m.
39 Motion carried 9-0.
40 Respectfully submitted,
41 Debbie Wolfe
42 TimeSaver Off Site Secretarial, Inc.
43
44 Mayor
45 ATTEST:
46 City Clerk
10
