WHEREAS, On March 10, 2026 Tibetans across the world will gather in their host countries to commemorate the 67th anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising against the occupation of Tibet, and to honor more than 1.2 million Tibetans who have died in this struggle; and WHEREAS, The occupation of Tibet and the ongoing suppression of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the degradation of Tibetan culture, religion, livelihoods, and identity, should be a concern for all people who value dignity and justice; and WHEREAS, The Chinese government has forcibly separated approximately one million Tibetan children, including children as young as four, into colonial boarding schools and preschools designed for forced assimilation, cutting them off from family, language, and faith, and causing severe emotional and psychological harm while accelerating the destruction of Tibetan identity; and WHEREAS, In 2025, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama celebrated his 90th birthday, a milestone the Tibetan community honors as the ‘Year of Compassion’, reaffirming his nine decades of leadership and advocacy for peace, nonviolence, and universal compassion, and calling on communities and leaders everywhere to recommit to these values; WHEREAS, The Tibetan American Foundation of Minnesota was founded in 1992 and, with more than 6,000 Tibetan members, is committed to promoting and preserving Tibetan culture, heritage, and religion; and WHEREAS, It is fitting to affirm the determination of the Tibetan people in Tibet and in exile to protect their heritage and identity against overwhelming odds through nonviolent and peaceful means. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Wendy Webster, Mayor of Saint Anthony Village, have the distinct honor of proclaiming March 10, 2026 as Tibet Day throughout Saint Anthony Village, Minnesota.
