perspectives. Consider if this community visioning meeting was open to all and if done again, could it be
open to all to allow anyone to participate?
Online events: A no-brainer option that allows the City to meet people where they are, everyone has an
opinion that they could provide. Good opportunity to capture the general population since this is a less-
targeted outreach method. Recommend using a more widely utilized or user-friendly online platform.
Focus groups: Ability to hold more specific discussions. Conduct interviews on areas such as affordable
housing – renters and people who work in but can’t afford to live in Saint Anthony are examples, what
would affordable housing look like for you and is there a role for the City to help that along?
Schools: work with other student groups beyond specific ones (only Key Club was engaged in the last
process), this will allow capturing responses from more kids. Tag along for tabling and sharing
information at events at the school (example Wilshire Fun Fest). Parents often wait for kids’ activities to
be done at the school, providing a captive audience the City can talk to.
What additional engagement should the City consider? Any specific areas of the City or groups?
The group values engaging community where they’re at, through online, and in structured forums. The
City should leverage existing engagement and activities in town to cast a wide net for responses.
Engagement should target several specific demographics and groups. Some that were mentioned
include:
-Parents with young children/families (ECFE playgroups, etc)
-School-age children (sports games and meets)
-Youth/adolescents (envisioning future-facing plans and how things could look for them)
-Empty nesters/elderly
-Immigrant population (previous outreach has been unsuccessful)
-Affordable housing niche: businesses and employees who work here, what would they need to
be able to afford to live here as well?
-Faith communities (series of workshops held at Nativity during the last plan development)
There are several resident-based groups in the city that consultants can engage with (Citizens for
Sustainability, parent groups, etc).
The City should also make efforts to involve regional partners in this process to provide subject matter
expertise (Clean Energy Resource Teams, counties, etc).
Audiences that the group felt were missing in 2040 plan engagement include:
-People attending community-based gatherings
-Connecting with black and brown communities that have been hard to reach at previous events,
minority population emphasis.
o Could there be a volunteer liaison or someone who can help with that?
o Use language line resources to connect despite language barriers, have outreach
materials in various languages or have translation services.
-Facebook surveys and engagement through City’s own accounts, as well as collaborating with
other existing social media accounts (e.g. SAV Police, SAV Fire, other partners)
Consider balancing quantity vs. quality in seeking responses and during engagement. Ideas shared:
10
