City Council Regular Meeting Minutes January 25, 2005 Page 4 1 Couneilmember Thuesen reported he met with half of a Boy Scout Troop a week ago to talk 2 about city government and help them earn a badge in that area. He said he will meet with the 3 other half of.'the troop this week Ile noted the youth are paying more attention to governmental 4 affairs than we give them credit for. Ile encouraged other councilmembcrs who are involved in 5 an organization to include some type of education such as this in their organization. 10 11 12 1.3 1.4 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31. 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 40 41 42 43 44 45 46 Councilmember Gray had no report. Councilmember Horst reported he attended the Sister City meeting on Sunday, with the stone sculpture symposium as the topic. He said St. Anthony will take part in this symposium to commission a sculptor to sculpt a figure statue that can be place in Salo Park, which will be by the new gathering area by Wal -Marti. He said they are in the process of reviewing artists. A representative from the Sister City Commission and the St. Paul Arts Council will choose a sculptor. The sculptures will be moved to sister cities, including St. Anthony. IIe noted he is on the head of the committee to raise funds. He also noted this is the 20°i anniversary of the City's sister city relationship with Salo. hi honor of this 20°i anniversary, activities are being planned in Salo. He said the sister city is requesting that a member of the current council be in Salo in June to help celebrate. Mayor Faust reported that be and the City Manager met with the nein Manager of Wal-Mart today and was very encouraged. The manager has many years of experience in the retail business, having worked for Kmart for 18 years. He bad also worked with Target. Ile said. he asked the manager to be part of the community, and believes he will. The manager is scheduled to speak at the Chamber luncheon on February 25, 2005. Ile said it would be beneficial for anyone interested to listen to him. Mayor Faust also mentioned the final report from the retreat will be on the web site in March. V111,. COiMMUNIT]' FORUM. Mayor Faust invited residents to come forward at this time and address the Council on items that are not on the regular agenda. Hearing none, Mayor Faust moved forward with the agenda. IX. INi+OI2MATION AND ANNOUNCEMENTS. City Manager Morrison noted the Council meetings in February and March. He pointed out the Joint meeting with the School Board on March 29. He indicated the Council will present goals with the group session portion of the Planning Commission on March 15. He noted the dates for regular Council meetings in April are the 12°i and 26"'. Ile asked that councilmembcrs advise him in advance if they cannot attend a meeting. Mayor Faust stated the St. Anthony team won in the Science Bowl at McAlester College, which speaks well for the school. He also noted he received a letter from a resident thanking the City for keeping the sidewalks clean all year. He thanked the Public Works Department for their work. 11
