City Council Regular Meeting Minutes
April 12, 2005
Page 5
1 and teaches fire prevention. In other events in 2004, he said his department participated in
2 Village Fest, and in the sport of fire ball. The department moved into the new station, and to
3 finish the year, they collected toys for tots.
4
5 He noted the Fire Department has recently completed the ISO rating. He said from all
6 indications, it went well. The department applied for a FEMA grant for $22,000. If it is granted,
7 he said they hope to obtain a new compressor. He indicated they are looking for an exhaust
8 system, and a generator for back up power. IIe noted they did lose some points in the ISO
9 because each necessary tool wasn't on the trucks. He said he wants to fill the trucks with
1.0 everything that is recommended.
11
12 Councilmember Horst asked if the'Department was ready, with the grass fire season being upon
13 us, and with the conditions being dry. Chief Malenick said. they are gearing up, and assured him
14 they will work with other authorities if needed.
1.5
16 Councihncmber Stille clarified a rumor that the St. Anthony Fire Department: had gone to Eden
17 Prairie for a mutual aid call. Chief Malenick said they have not gone that faraway. Its said a
18 couple years ago, the grass fires in Andover were more than that city could handle. St. Anthony
19 did send a truck and crew to Andover for a day. He said more recently, they were sent to
20 Ramsey for the recent building explosion. He explained that years ago when St. Anthony had
21 the 84 tornados, Andover sent a crew here without asking, and it was appreciated. Chief
22 Malenick said he could finally return the, favor.
23
24 Councilmember Gray commended Chief Malenick and his team for the nice work they do. Ire
25 asked if Chief Malenick compares the numbers and type of calls to others in the area. Chief
26 Malenick said he does compare the numbers to the state marshal's numbers.
27
28 Councilmember Gray questioned whether any information was gathered regarding how the
29 response times affect insurance rates. Chief Malenick answered that the ISO officials do spend a
30 day with the dispatcher- but lie could not answer that question. He said they do have an ISO
31 rating of 5 currently. He said compared to the other cities of the same population, a 5 is good;
32 others are around 9 to 10.
33
34 Councilmember Thuesen asked when the last .ISO rating was done. Chief Malenick said it has
35 been ten years. He said an evaluation can be requested sooner.
36
37 Councilmember Thuesen asked if the department gets the grant, whether that would be worthy of
38 getting an ISO evaluation. Chief Malenick answered it is possible, and would possibly bump the
39 rating from a 5 to a 4 which isn't a huge difference in homeowners insurance.
40
41 Mayor Faust said that based on two businesses that have given the department money, it is an
42 indication they are deep into the community and applauded him and his department for a
43 vigorous year.
44
45
R1
