The findings from the
discussions include:
• Elementary, secondary, and post -secondary schools are a good source of
information and have connections and ties throughout the community.
These resources are -beneficial to a city considering any broadband
network or service offering. St. Anthony -New Brighton Independent School
District 282 (District 282) has established leased -fiber and T1 connectivity
to all of its facilities and is active within the Twin Cities to monitor- what
other schools are doing.
o Cost is important to schools. However, as needs to continue to
increase, T1 interconnectivity will no longer serve the education
needs. Many school districts in the US have implemented or are
seeking dedicated connectivity of 1Gbps among their facilities.
o District 2.82 has connected all of their buildings with fiber and is
exploring applications to make use of that connectivity.. One
example includes . investigation of a voice over Internet protocol
(VoIP) telephone system. District 282 is exploring possibly a VolP
system of their own or joining with the 11 other communities who are
using the North Suburban Communications Commission/City of
Roseville Vol P system.
o The staff of District 282 has data access points available within the
school buildings, but do not have mobility to go outside of the
building. For example, a teacher cannot take a class outside or for
2-6
68catl
Was Caluwa
..... ......
