25
MEMO
DATE: June 12, 2007
TO: Mike Mornson, City Manager
Roger Larson, Finance Director
FROM: John Ohl, Chief of Police W (
SUBJECT: Traffic Safety Grants
In this memo, I hope to clarify some of the issues related to the State Traffic Safety Grants
commonly referred to as Safe and Sober, ACE, and Nitecap. There are two parts to this Traffic
Safety Grant:
Safe and Sober — This is a State Grant administered by Ramsey County. The granting period
runs from October thru September. Our first Safe and Sober Grant was for $7, 500 and runs
from October, 2006 to September, 2007. In October, 2006, we signed a resolution accepting
this grant.
Our second Safe and Sober Grant is for $10,000 and runs from October, 2007 to September,
2008. This is the grant for which we need a current resolution. This grant also includes an
additional $2,400 for extra DWI enforcement. We will not receive any of these funds until
October, 2007, at which time I will provide finance with a copy of the grant and the award.
ACE/Nitecap - This grant is for $4,800 and runs from October, 2006 to September, 2007. I
have previously given finance a copy of this grant in 2006. Although, this is a combined grant,
the checks will come listed as either "ACE" or "Nitecap". The State does not break down what
part of the $4,800 is for ACE and what part is for Nitecap.
We are currently working on the 2007/2008 Nitecap Grant, and have not yet been funded. Upon
being funded, I will also provide a copy of this new grant and the award to finance.
Note — we do not receive lump sums for any of these grants. The State secures the time from
participating agencies prior to reimbursing the department for overtime worked.
JO:vj
