26
Kim Moore -Sykes
From:
Sent: Saturday, July 07, 2007 6:28 PM
To: recycling
Subject: Single Sort Recycling is Great
I am writing to give our household's furl. support for the continuation of the single -sort
recycling program in St. Anthony.
The thought that our new single -sort recycling program could go away is a confusing
proposition to our household. Why would someone actually choose to sort their recycling
when you can easily put it all together In one bin without wasting time sorting and
carrying out more than one container? It baffles me that this could only be a test
program - I hope it is a permanent program in our. neighborhood - and city-wide.
We moved here from the San Francisco Bay Area, an area with one of the highest percentage
of recycling contributions In the country, and were not given the 'choice' of single sort,
our town implemented it knowing it; had multiple positive outcomes for our community:
-Recycling materials would no longer wash down the street drains In rain storms or blow
all over the neighborhood when .it was windy.
-Recycling participation would increase because busy people would no longer have to sort
th.i.er materials and decide they didn't have time to participate; people could easily toss
al_lrecyclables in the same container.
-Garbage cans In California are small. - people pay a lot for garbage pickup and would
rather choose to throw a.l.l recyclable materialin a large (no charge) bin, than pay more
for garbage service.
-No more walking out mul.t.i.ple bags and containers of: recycl.abl.es to the curb - what a pain
when it is -10 degrees in MN! We love only having one recycling bin - in fact we asked
for a larger one. We consistently have a ratio of about h to 1. (recyclables to garbage).
-It; is a benefit to only need one bin - it beautifies the neighborhood by giving a uniform
look to the recycling containers, and reduces the amount of. 'clutter' around properti.es.
In addition, a closed plastic bin looks much better than multiple over -stacked bins, or
grocery bags laying around the. alley.
:I: can not think of any reason not to continue the single -sort recycling program; it Is
easy, it is quick, and it benefits us all. by getting more recycleable materials out of our
Landfills and back into a second useful life in our communities and our. cities.
Thank you in advance for choosing to continue this wonderful. program
DeAnn qllISCand Kurt '411111101ibL
1
