50
SAINT PAUL - RAMSEY COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SECTION
2009 SCORE FUNDING GRANT APPLICATION
CITY/TOWNSHIP: City of St. Anthony Village
CONTACT PERSON: Kim Moore -Sykes
ADDRESS: 3301 Silver Lake Road, St, Anthony, MN 55418
PHONE: 612-782-3312
FAX: 612-782-3302
EMAIL: kmoore-svkesa@ci.saint-anthony.mn.us
SCORE GRANT REQUEST
1. What measurable goals does your municipality have for waste reduction and recycling activities in 2009? Please describe
how progress toward these goals will be measured and evaluated. At least ONE measurable goal must be listed. CITY GOAL: In
2007, the City approved a single sort recycling pilot project as proposed and promoted by the garbage haulers licensed to
work in St. Anthony. At the end of that year, the Council listened to testimony horn the county about t-tne effectiveness of
this recycling program. Since the community overwhelmingly supported it, the City Council approved it in 2008 as the
recycling program that would be used city-wide. We expected our nwnbcrs fio drastically increase, but they held Che same.
levels or were reduced, despite apparentincreases in curbside collection. 'Phe only reason for this situation thatwe had
calve as the result of discussions with the haulers and county officials. 'They all suggested that manufachaers are also
malting an effort to reduce waste by reducing packaging or the weight thereof due to manufactm'ing and/or
transportation costs.
Despite several reports recently in mainstream media that recyclables urukets are down, Che City will continue to educate
and encourage residents to continue recycling, reusing and/or repairing. We are also conunitted to meeting with Ole
haulers licensed to work in St. Anthony Village to also encourage Chem to also step up their efforts in educating their
customers about recycling. Bat clearly this will be an up hill effortas they are not receiving the revenue they have in the
past and they would argue that the revenue they ale getting is not sufficient to cover their added fuel and labor costs.
2. Describe the activities a SCORE grant would be used for in your municipality and how these funds will enhance your
existing waste reduction and recycling programs.
