Hennepin County Medical Center <br />Emergency Medical Services <br />701 Park Avenue South, MC 825 <br />Minneapolis, MN 55415 <br />612-873-5678 Office <br />June 25, 2008 <br />3505 Silver Lake Road <br />St. Anthony, MN 55418 <br />Dear Chief Malenick: <br />In the afternoon on June 13, 2008, Hennepin County Emergency Medical Services co - <br />responded along with your department to a medical call at 2518 33 Avenue NE in St. <br />Anthony. <br />On arrival, a 93 year old gentleman was found to be in respiratory arrest. He had been <br />short of breath for several days and when his family attempted to put him in the car to <br />transport him to the hospital, he collapsed. 911 was dialed. St. Anthony Fire <br />Department arrived and found this patient unresponsive with agonal respirations. The <br />Fire Department provided extraordinary and aggressive airway management which <br />directly led to a remarkable recovery by the patient. HCMC EMS arrived and took over <br />patient care after receiving report from your staff on scene. The patient was transported <br />to Abbott -Northwestern where he was awake and talking on arrival. This favorable <br />patient outcome was a direct result of excellent BLS care and airway management that <br />was provided by the St. Anthony Fire Department. <br />First Responders provide a critical role in identifying, and initiating treatment for patients <br />with acute illnesses and injuries. Your crew's ability to expeditiously identify and care for <br />this patient had a favorable affect on his outcome.
