3 <br />Staff Report <br />To: Mike Mornson <br />From: John Malenick, Fire Chief <br />Date: July 15, 2009 <br />Re, Muscular Dystrophy Fill the Boot campaign <br />Background: The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) is the labor <br />organization that represents the full time St. Anthony Fire Fighters as well as <br />280,000 other Fire Fighters throughout the United States and Canada. They are <br />also the single largest national sponsor of the Muscular Dystrophy Association and <br />its annual Labor Day telethon. Through their Fill the Boot campaign, the IAFF has <br />raised over $275 million toward the world wide research efforts of the MDA as well <br />as many summer camps for children, public health education and other programs. <br />For many years the St. Anthony Fire Fighters have contributed to this campaign <br />both monetarily and in time spent answering phones at the telethon. <br />Consideration: For the first time this year, our Fire Fighters are hoping to expand <br />their involvement to include donation collections on the street as well as the <br />sidewalks at the Cub Food Store and the Wal-Mart shopping center. They are <br />proposing a three day event, Monday Aug. 24, Tuesday and Wednesday, <br />beginning late afternoon into early evening (rush hour). Fire Fighters will greet <br />motorists, shoppers and others to collect donations of money to the MDA in their <br />fire boots. <br />Other issues considered: Fire Fighters will conduct their Fill the Boot activities in a <br />manner that neither interferes with or precludes the performance of their regular <br />duties nor detracts from other work-related obligations to the public. <br />In the event of a large scale incident during the collection times, the MDA will <br />provide back up in the form of volunteer family members of children suffering from <br />Muscular Dystrophy. <br />Part time Fire Fighters will be invited to join the IAFF members in this fundraising <br />effort. <br />Event is insured by the Muscular Dystrophy Association <br />Thank you for your consideration. <br />Staff involved: Joe Basara, Mark Sitarz, John Malenick <br />0 Page 1 <br />
