34
Rationale for this plan -
We are very short on gym space in the community, This plan addresses gym shortage issues for
the city and school district. We will increase the number of gym courts available for public use
from two to five.
• Available gym time for the community would increase dramatically. Space available during the
week will increase 170% and space on the weekend would increase 110%- 250%.
• The school district is investing $1.3 million in a cafeteria and an additional $150,000 to repair
the upper gym floor so it will be suitable for gym use. In addition, the school district will change
staffing to appropriately accommodate weekend use as needed.
• City/public groups will be less likely to need to travel outside the city for gym space.
• For the school —this addresses the greatest deficiency for curricular space in the secondary
building.
• Locker rooms would be available for use at the HS/MS —currently none are available at the
community center, meaning groups must change either in the atrium or bathrooms.
• Since the passing of Title IX legislation in 1972, our community's pool of athletes has doubled
and we have lost three gyms (Silver Oak, Parkview, and the current weight room space). In
response to losing three gyms, we have only added the community center gym since this time.
• The community center gym is a nice space, but is not appropriately sized or designed as a
competition space. There is not adequate or safe room for spectators or locker room space for
changing.
• Sports Boosters would have two very nice gyms in which to play their games.
• Gymnastics would be allowed to flourish. This change would provide a better space for youth
programming and a more secure area for equipment without the wear -and -tear of high school
physical education activities not intended for gymnastics equipment.
Additional Notes ...
• This change creates a good space for Community Services programming—youth gymnastics,
aerobics, yoga, etc.
• Quieter activities and groups would now be hosted at the Community Center in the evening (no
more distractions during meetings).
• Safety — a better match of appropriate activities and ages for our gym spaces.
• The Blueprint for a Bright Future Task Force (community -led task force) made this
recommendation in 2005 to the School Board.
