SRTS PLANS <br />SRTS plans are one of the most effective ways that Minnesota schools and their partn <br />have used to open up walking and bicycling to school as an option for more families. <br />SRTS plans: <br />Identify existing conditions, including safety barriers for children walking and <br />bicycling to school <br />Evaluate assets in the community that could support more walking and bicycling <br />Develop specific actions for 1-5 years that could support more children walking <br />and bicycling to school. These should include all 5e's- education,. <br />encouragement, enforcement, evaluation, and engineering <br />How Communities Support SRTS Plans <br />In order to complete a successful SRTS ,plan funded by MnDOT, the following <br />participation is requested from communities: <br />- Form a SRTS team with representatives from each school included in the plan <br />well as representatives from the City, County, public health, school district <br />and other key partners <br />- Help provide information for MnDOT's SRTS Neighborhood Assessment <br />- Perform classroom tallies to determine how children currently get to school, <br />at minimum in grades 3,5 and 7 <br />- Attend four meetings to share ideas and identify priorities for the plan <br />Resources to help with Plan Implementation <br />A number of resources are available to assist schools in implementing SRTS plans: <br />- MnDOT funded SRTS plans at 70 schools in Minnesota in 2012-2013, <br />another 34 schools will begin work in 2013 <br />- MnDOT developed a new SRTS Evaluation Tool to collect statewide data on <br />school travel patterns, barriers and opportunities <br />- MnDOT provides direct technical assistance to Minnesota Schools <br />- Through partnership with MDH, MDE, and the Bicycle Alliance of MN, <br />MnDOT is developing lesson plans and providing training in teaching safe <br />bicycling and walking skills to Minnesota youth <br />- Communities can apply for both infrastructure and non -infrastructure grants <br />to implement the plans <br />- MDH SHIP programs can fund SRTS non -infrastructure <br />Bnngi�y Iegcdhet <br />amnn,un,ty ao�xi I+rnlrh. <br />as <br />
