ANTHONY COUNCIL WORKSHOP MINUTES June 9 , 1981 The meeting was called to order by Mayor,. Haik at 6-:48 P.M. Present for roll--call: Marks , . Haik, Sundland and Ranallo. Absent: Letourneau. Also present: Larry. Hamer, Acting. City: Manager; . Ray Nelson, Liquor Manager. Mr. Nelson detailed the ..liquor operation at Apache Plaza, which was the purpose-.of this..workshop. .. He indicated. 1980 gross sales for the Apache operation was $1,090 ,000 with .a net profit of $149 ,000. The off-sale alone did gross- sales of $858 ,000 . with a net profit of $98.,.000 in 1980 . The matter . of future location .of..a New Brighton .liquor operation was brought .up by Mr.. Nelson. He pointed out that .if New Brighton put in a liquor .store at .Silver' Lane and- Silver Lake Road, business at the City 's Apache location would suffer. He told the Council the lease at Apache will not expire for another three years. The City, • under the present lease , pays $2 . 00/square foot and Mr. Nelson anticipated it would increase to . approximately . $8 .00/square foot in the next lease. Mr. Nelson then proposed two options for anew location for an off-sale liquor store to the Councilmembers. (1) Blanske property located off of Silver Lake Road, the south three lots along- Silver Lane. Mr. Blanske had quoted a tentative price of $80 ,000 .. Mayor. Haik indicated she would be opposed to that location. (2) Fas .Gas property located on- the northeast corner .of 37th Avenue and Silver Lake Road. Mr- Nelson contacted the owner, who indicated .an interest .in selling this property.. The owner was to contact Mr-. Nelson for further discussion, but had not done so yet. Councilman Ranallo suggested the Liquor Manager and the Acting City Manager pursue possible purchase of the Fas. Gas property. The rest of the Councilmembers appeared .to .be in agreement with this suggestion. Councilman Ranallo also suggested the Liquor Manager .and Acting City Manager .check .into the possibility of -purchasing the Purity Store which .is immediately to the east of the Fas Gas property. This • suggestion also appeared to meet with approval with the other Council- members. L -2- Mayor -Haik directed Mr. Hamer .to. contact .Mr.. Soth., the. City Attorney , to inquire of New Brighton's City Attorney the validity of New Brighton having an option.- on the. .vacant gas station at Silver Lane and Silver Lake Road. for the-purpose of locating . a liquor .store at that location.. Mayor Haik felt our residents should be aware of this, if it is indeed a fact. . Mayor Haik recessed the work, session . at: 7 :20.. P.M. ,for 10 minutes in order to resume the 7 :3.0. P.M.. regular.
