1 The interview of Peggy Swonger, 3525 Stinson Boulevard, to fill
2 the vacancy on the Eastside Hennepin County Human Services
3 Committee opened at 7 : 22 P.M. , following the H.R.A. interview of
4 Lang/Nelson. The Mayor and all four Councilmembers, as well as
5 the City Manager, Attorney and Public Works Director were present.
6 Ms. Swonger told the Councilmembers she had an interest in this
7 type of community service because she was in Occupational Therapy
8 classes at St. Mary' s. She indicated she was new in St. Anthony
9 and thought this presented her with a good opportunity of doing
10 some volunteer work related to her field without going too far
11 from her home.
12 Mr. Childs told the applicant he understood the Committee met one
13 Tuesday every month in the highrise building on 18th Avenue N.E.
14 and Central.
15 Councilmember Makowske indicated she perceived Ms. Swonger could
16 get a good feel for what the Committee did from Roscella Connolly
17 who had served as Chair of the Committee for three years.
18 Mayor Sundland said he perceived this Committee to be more of
• 19 preventive maintenance type rather than a reactionary group. Mr.
20 Childs said he understood one of the main functions of this
21 Committee was . to help the Human Services Department decide where
22 funds could best be spent to provide for the Department' s needs
23 network including the handicapped, the unemployed, the elderly,
24 and single parent households.
25 The Mayor told the applicant the Council would be formally
26 appointing her to serve as the City' s representative on the
27 Committee during the Council meeting which would follow. He
28 indicated the Council would welcome her reports on the Committee
29 activities and a visit with her if she had any questions or was
30 looking for direction from them.
31 Her appointment was formalized by the following motion during a
32 short recess for that purpose of the meeting of the Housing and
33 Redevelopment Authority which followed the Council meeting at 9 : 00
34 P.M.
35 Council Action
36 Motion by Marks, seconded by Enrooth to appoint Peggy Swonger to
37 fill the vacancy on the Eastside Hennepin County Human Services
38 Committee.
