Why are you interested in this opportunity?
Being on City Council would provide me the opportunity to better serve a community that I have grown to love. While St.
Anthony has faced some difficult issues since I first moved here in 2015, I think it is heading in the right direction. I would like
to help continue that movement.
I am excited about the progress the City is making with sustainability and our environmental impact, and I think more can be
done. I am encouraged by the steps our Police Department has taken in recent years to both increase community outreach
and to enhance their training, development, and wellness programs, and I would like to work with them to see those efforts
grow. I understand that there are a number of development proposals currently being prepared for submission to the City, and
I look forward to working within the Council's authority to shape those projects to align with our Comprehensive Plan in order
to have the best results for the city's housing and business needs. And I most look forward to having the opportunity to learn
more about our City and its residents, and to work with them to make St. Anthony an even better place to call home.

What skills or personal qualities do you possess that would make you valuable as a council member?
I have spent my 15+ year professional career as an attorney working in the insurance industry. That experience has given me
a unique skill set that would be useful on City Council. Everyday I have clients who are looking at me to help come up with
solutions to problems they face. My work has highlighted the importance of attention to detail and how unwise it can be to
formulate a position before gathering all the necessary facts. I have learned that sometimes it is more effective to negotiate
and compromise than it is to advocate, and how to recognize when those situations present themselves.
And being in the insurance industry specifically has given me valuable experience with risk management. My daily practice in
that field requires me to anticipate both the immediate and long-term consequences of decisions taken by my clients and their
customers. Those skills are easily translatable to City Council, as a body which is tasked with passing ordinances and making
other decisions that directly impact St. Anthony's citizens. My perspective will help City Council be better focused on achieving
its desired results and minimizing any unintended outcomes.
How does your background add value to your role as a council member?
A couple of things come to mind for this question. First, I grew up in a small town in Virginia that was about the same size as
St. Anthony. When my family was first looking at homes here, I could immediately sense the pride that St. Anthony residents
had for their city and the importance of community. I readily identified with this feeling because it was the same as was shared
by the citizens of my hometown. In that setting, I was raised to appreciate how important it is to really communicate with your
neighbors - both in the way provide your point of view and in the way that you listen to theirs. I learned that it was always
critical to treat people with kindness and respect, especially when there were disagreements. Even if you do not see eye-to-
eye with someone on one issue, it is likely that you will have common ground with them on several other issues. And even if
you do not, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain by offering that respect and kindness.
I am also an alcoholic in long-term recovery with 11+ years of sobriety. For the past several years, I have been a sponsor,
mentor, peer support, and advocate for others who are dealing with substance use and mental health issues. Dealing with my
own struggles and helping others has taught me empathy, how to be a good listener, and how to earn and build trust. Each of
these traits are important for a City Council member. Just like any other city, St. Anthony has residents who are struggling -
with health, money, housing, food, jobs, personal relationships, and a myriad of other issues. And while the Council may not
be able to take action to address everyone's struggles, I think it can do a better job of listening, empathizing, and building more
trust within our community.
What strengths or abilities do you believe you will add to the council?
It is my understanding that the current members of the 2020 City Council all have long-time ties to St. Anthony. Without a
doubt, the knowledge that comes with that experience is an incredibly important resource for our City's leadership to have.
But since moving to St. Anthony in 2015, I have observed a fairly consistent pattern: Retirees and other empty-nesters are
either downsizing or moving to different locations, and (with few exceptions) young families are buying those homes and
moving in. My family is one of those families, and we have connected and become close friends with several of those other
young families who are also new to the City. I believe that I can give a voice to this sizable and growing constituency. I think
City Council would benefit by combining the experience of its current members with the perspective of newer residents who
may have ideas of how to move the City forward that have not been tried before.
Are you able to prepare for and attend meetings including work session and liaison/affiliation meetings?
Yes. I took an in-house legal position in 2016 so I could have a more flexible work schedule and have the ability to devote
more time both to my family and to those causes about which I am passionate. St. Anthony is one of my passion projects, and
the City Council position would take precedence over other activities I'm involved in, none of which are long term
commitments.

For decades our city has been a policy leader but for the last several years St. Anthony has been more of a follower than a
leader when it comes to creating proactive policies While cities all around us, big and small, have proactively created policies
and strategies to deal with issues of housing, business development, and community involvement, St Anthony has been more
reactive. I want to work with leaders within our community and from other cities and organizations to identify the best, most
innovative, and proven policies to move our community forward.
I think the city must do more engagement with the community. The city can be more proactive in engaging with the community,
and I have many years of experience successfully doing that.
What St. Anthony community activities have you been involved in?
I have been involved in many activities in my time living in St. Anthony. I was engaged with my neighbors living in Lowry Grove
trying to help them keep their housing, the only truly affordable housing in the city. I worked closely with my SOSA neighbors
to ensure that the development at the Lowry Grove site fit with what our neighborhood wanted and what we felt was the best
and safest use of the land. I have doorknocked and talked to hundreds of residents about their concerns in the city when I ran
for City Council 2 years ago. My son is a student at Wilshire Park Elementry and I have attended many events at the school.

What skills or personal qualities do you possess that would make you valuable as a council member?
I have decades of work in government, politics, and nonprofits and I want to put that experience to work for the people of St.
Anthony. My government work spans several levels and two states, both the Michigan Legislature and more recently the
Minnesota Legislature. I know how to navigate the many layers of government to get things done for those I am working on
behalf of, I want to do that for the city of St. Anthony. My years working in politics, organizing communities to be involved in the
process and more importantly providing people with the skills and knowledge to keep them involved and make the change
they want to see. And for the past six years, I have been working with community-based nonprofits in the Twin Cities around
issues of affordable housing, business development, and community organizing.
How does your background add value to your role as a council member?
In the Fall of 1990, a coworker of mine asked me to volunteer with him at the campaign office of Congressman John Dingell
and it changed my life forever. At the time I wasn’t at all involved in, nor did I care about, politics, I was majoring in elementary
education and I had no idea how much my worldview, and how I saw myself in it, was about to be forever altered. It was there
that I met people that were very involved in their community and not just in a political sense. I wanted to be involved too, and
the route I chose was to make a difference through the political process. It was at that time I began to reflect on my life and the
options I had growing up and how different things could have been for me, had it not been for the people and community that
surrounded me in Detroit, MI. I was suddenly seeing for the first time where my life had taken me was not just a random series
of events, but a strong effort on the part of many people and institutions that laid a path for me to follow. I’ve now seen what
kind of impact can be made in the lives of others when communities come together. Growing up in one of the poorest and
underserved areas of the country, the southwest side of Detroit, MI, I was raised by my mother and grandmother, both of
whom had strong beliefs in giving back to the community. From this early foundation, I internalized their words and actions by
engaging in political and government career opportunities so that I could be a part of positive change. Since then, my life has
been filled with opportunities to work with everyone from Presidents to those living on the fringes of our society, and I learned
something from them all.
From the time I graduated college most of my adult life was spent working in government and managing political campaigns,
including Congressman Keith Ellison’s first successful run for Congress in 2006. But a few years ago I decided to take my
love of community, my desire to create positive change and pivot my life path from politics to nonprofits. I spent the next year
consulting with several nonprofits, using my experience and expertise from decades of political and marketing work to help my
clients, including the Muslim American Society of MN and ASSEST Campaign. In January of 2016, I began working as the
Executive Director for Nonprofit Organization in North Minneapolis, the Harrison Neighborhood Association and this year I
started a position as Executive Director of the West Broadway Business and Area Coalition.

Why are you interested in this opportunity?
Earlier this year, I was scheduled to testify to the House Education Finance committee. I arrived early and stopped by to say
hello to Representative Kunesh-Podein. She invited me into her office to work while I waited for the committee meeting to
begin. At one point, I asked Ms. Kunesh-Podein what she enjoys most about serving as our state representative. I listened
and learned about the relationships she has developed with her colleagues in the House and perspectives she shares to
influence legislation and positively impact the lives of Minnesotans everyday. I resonated with Ms. Kunesh-Podein’s
leadership and was inspired to continue my service on a local level.
I believe we have the power to choose to develop respectful relationships and work together to benefit the residents of St.
Anthony. Council members have a common goal outlined in our City’s mission: To be a progressive and welcoming Village
that is walkable, sustainable and safe. This mission serves as a guidepost every time our Council makes a decision.
I am deeply invested and committed to creating a welcoming, inclusive community of St. Anthony Village. My husband and I
have lived in St. Anthony since 1999. I have worked for St. Anthony-New Brighton School District since 2008 and, in 2012, we
were lucky to become a family of four through adoption. This community warmly welcomed our children into St. Anthony and
my goal every day is to ensure new residents and young families feel they are welcomed into and valued by our Village too.

What skills or personal qualities do you possess that would make you valuable as a council member?
I believe my active involvement in St. Anthony combined with my skills in listening, learning and problem solving would be a
valuable asset to City Council. I value people and listening to their experiences to understand how each person perceives the
world. I value learning and seeking multiple perspectives in order to make better decisions. I am a problem solver who
recognizes the best solutions come from our practice of actively listening to those who are directly impacted. For example, in
the fall of 2017, our Director of Special Education and I listened to several parents voice concerns about their experience with
transportation the school district was providing for their children to attend early childhood special education programs. After
several attempts to work with the contractor and improve the service to families, we developed a proposal for the School
Board recommending the School District lease two vans, hire and train drivers. Our goal was to immediately improve the
families’ experience for their children and the Board approved the plan. We are in our second year of school district staff
creating relationships with parents and their children to safely transport young children to early childhood special education
programs. Even more, we can ensure our families’ first experience with our school district is a positive one.
How does your background add value to your role as a council member?
As a community member, I believe St. Anthony Village is a great place to live. I also believe, as a City Council, we have an
obligation to carry out the mission of St. Anthony Village, to be welcoming, progressive, and an inclusive community that is
sustainable for future generations. As a parent, I believe St. Anthony Village is an excellent community in which to raise our
children. I am grateful my children attend great schools, are cared for by their neighbors, and feel safe walking and biking to
school and around St. Anthony. As an educator, I believe we have a responsibility to learn from our community in order to best
serve our whole community. Our school district continues to examine and change our practices to ensure the success of all
learners. I have also observed the strong working relationship between our City and School District and that partnership is
valuable to our community. As a leader, I recognize the trust I have developed over time with our community members and
families. I take that responsibility seriously every day and work to retain and enhance that trust. As the Director of Community
Services for St. Anthony-New Brighton School District, I have the opportunity to interact with our families whose valuable time
is spent raising young children. In my conversations with families, I listen to their needs and ideas and help seek out
resources or support as requested.

What strengths or abilities do you believe you will add to the council?
I believe my strengths of teamwork, connectedness, positivity and reflection will contribute to the effectiveness of our City
Council. I am a team player who understands that developing trust, our skills and capacity results in a higher functioning,
more responsive team. I also see the big picture and recognize the connections between the smaller pieces and how it
influences the whole. As I served with other volunteers in 2015 to raise funds for our coworker and beloved teacher with ALS
and door knocked in 2014 and 2017 to help our community learn about school referendums, we understood our purpose and
had a goal to achieve.
I am a positive leader who believes we can have high expectations for ourselves and others and learn from our mistakes. I
am a reflective, listening leader who seeks to understand and strives to ensure people can share their perspectives, feel
recognized and valued. In 2014, I led a process to engage our community and seek feedback from stakeholders to prepare
for our School District’s strategic planning sessions. Our online survey and community listening sessions resulted in
participation from over 600 residents. The community feedback helped our strategic planning committee have a broader
understanding of our strengths and areas for improvement as a School District.
In 2018, I was honored to receive the Villager of the Year award and humbled to learn 14 residents of St. Anthony wrote letters
of support for my nomination. Again, I recognize the trust I have developed over time with our community members and
families and take that responsibility seriously every day.

Why are you interested in this opportunity?
I am interested in this opportunity because, above all, I enjoy living in St. Anthony. I am hopeful that we can retain what we
love and value about our village (our strong sense of place as a community, feeling safe and peaceful when we walk our
streets, enjoying our amenities and community organizations, etc.) while continuing to help our city grow responsibly as a
great place to live. I also have the capacity and skills to serve as a city council person. I strongly believe in the value and

What St. Anthony community activities have you been involved in?
I am a founding member and leader of the community group St. Anthony Villagers for Community Action (SAVCA). This group
was founded in the summer of 2016 and has since engaged in numerous local civic activities, focused on fostering community
ties, community engagement, and community equity and justice projects.
Sample projects in which I have had a significant role include: forming a police advisory committee to research facts and
options for the St. Anthony Police Department and the St. Anthony City Council to engage in review and analysis of police
department activities and procedures in the wake of the shooting death of Philando Castile; organizing a community response
of advocacy, support and specific humanitarian assistance in support of the residents of the Lowry Grove Mobile Home Park
during their fight to keep their housing and subsequent displacement; organizing supporting community meals for several
months for a St. Anthony family victimized by a violent crime; advocating for specific policy provisions supportive of affordable
housing in the new St. Anthony Comprehensive Plan.
I have run for elected office in St. Anthony twice: for city council in 2017 and for mayor in 2019. Through these campaigns, I
have learned an exceptional amount about our community and the people who live and work in it. I have formed meaningful
connections with hundreds of St. Anthony constituents through my campaign interactions.
What skills or personal qualities do you possess that would make you valuable as a council member?
I am a naturally curious person and work hard to actively listen to and champion the concerns of the community members
around me. I value a collaborative leadership style, including seeking input from community members who have talent and
expertise to offer. I pride myself on being even tempered and pragmatic in nearly any situation. I truly strive to celebrate the
best qualities in those around me.
How does your background add value to your role as a council member?
I have participated extensively in St. Anthony since 2016 as a community organizer for SAVCA activities. This has given me
the opportunity to work and build relationships with diverse people in St. Anthony on a number of different projects. I enjoy and
value the many perspectives and talents offered by the people in our community.
When running for office in St. Anthony, I had high volunteer support from Villagers and experienced enthusiastic energy for my
messages of increased openness and inclusivity in our local government. Hundreds of voters in St. Anthony (across two
elections) found that my perspectives and values align with theirs. This background would add tremendous value to my role
as a council member as I will give a voice and affiliation to these voters, and help this important perspective in our electorate
have a place in our local government.
What strengths or abilities do you believe you will add to the council?
I have practiced law for over 20 years. This professional work gives me strong analytical skills in policy and legal reasoning. I
excel at fully researching and understanding an issue before coming to conclusions. I also work to seek out advisers and
come to the best solution for all. I am strong at bringing differing opinions together and willing to do the hard work and
research to make a well-informed decision.

is any example for how not to act, I would welcome the opportunity to work with people who think differently than me to find
compromise while keeping in mind that we must all work together for the betterment of the residents of St. Anthony, whom we
represent. My inner drive for public service began shortly after college when I joined AmeriCorps*VISTA. This experience
taught me many useful skills – the most valuable of which was the importance of a higher calling like public service. In fact,
that lesson has informed my entire life as I chose a career path working for nonprofit organizations. I currently serve in the role
of Development Specialist for the North Memorial Health Foundation, where I work on developing programs and services that
otherwise wouldn’t be possible if not for philanthropy.
2) I believe that I can help bridge the gap between the more progressive voices within our city and the more conservative. I
personally believe in, and support, our police department, our city management, and our city leaders while also believing that
we can do better. This mindset is crucial for paving a path forward. There is no room for complacency when it comes to
innovation and reform but that should not be at odds with the established practices that have made our city great and made
our city a supremely desirable place for people to live. We must always be striving to be better while acknowledging the
successes and good work of the past.
3) I have been a resident for 4.5 years now and plan to live here the rest of my life (I am 34). I have seen firsthand what sets
our city apart from many others, having lived in St. Cloud, Duluth, Seattle, and now SAV. I believe that my varied experience
living in other cities gives me a unique perspective. In addition to my 4.5 years living in SAV, my mother grew up at a house on
30th and Wilson! So while my own roots maybe don't run as deep as others applying for this position, my family has deep
roots in SAV and so does my passion for our community.

What St. Anthony community activities have you been involved in?
I attend Village Fest every year and this past year, personally solicited my employer to become a sponsor. North Memorial
Health has a clinic in The Village and I encouraged our sponsorship committee to consider supporting Village Fest. I received
communication from them last year that they will likely sponsor in 2020. I also attend the Kiwanis Waffle Breakfast every year
to demonstrate my support for organizations that support SAV. Additionally, I consider myself a “news junkie” and am always
keeping up on current events within our city via council meeting minutes, the SAV Twitter account, and the Village Notes that
are distributed quarterly. I also recently applied for the Parks and Environmental Commission because I am very interested in
giving back through public service.
What skills or personal qualities do you possess that would make you valuable as a council member?
I am reliable and will attend all meetings required of me as a councilmember. I have the time, energy, and motivation to learn
at the feet of those more tenured than myself. I would approach this position humbly and with humility as a partner with other
councilmembers. My long history of volunteering demonstrates my commitment to positions like this, which require a person to
work outside of their normal job to serve a higher purpose. I believe that if I have the power to affect my local community and
the people within it, that I have an obligation to do so. Additionally, my current job and various positions on committees have
prepared me well for this role as I am well accustomed to the type of forum a council meeting provides. I am always trying to
self-reflect and better myself while striving to seek perspective outside of my own shoes so I may better understand a point of
view different than my own.
How does your background add value to your role as a council member?
I currently serve on the Development Committee and the Event Planning Committee for the Friends of the Boundary Waters.
Friends of the BWCA is an environmental advocacy organization focused on four missions: 1) opposing sulfide mining in the
wilderness area, 2) introducing young people to camping and the outdoors, 3) ensuring the BWCA remains a protected
wilderness area, and 4) supporting thriving gateway communities.
I also currently serve as the Supervisory Committee Chairperson for the North Memorial Federal Credit Union. My duties
include leading a 5 person independent oversight committee with duties that include quarterly drawer and vault counts,
dormant account review, loan review, new members and closed accounts, procedure audits, CEO and corporate expenses
review, NCUA examiner meetings, money orders and prepaid cards review. I have served in this capacity since January 2019
and was asked to chair the committee by the Board of Directors and CEO.
What strengths or abilities do you believe you will add to the council?
I believe I can offer a middle-of-the-road perspective. Often, I think about the division I see in our community between the
more progressive mindset and the more traditional. When I consider these two positions, I think I am the type of person who
can listen to both sides and then make an independent and unbiased judgement that is best for all residents. I also truly
believe in making data-driven decisions and I would bring that belief to this position on the council. I believe that if you’re not
being data-driven in your decision making, then you’re just throwing a dart at a board.
Are you able to prepare for and attend meetings including work session and liaison/affiliation meetings?
Yes. My job is very flexible, and my boss has told me often that if I were to seek positions like this that he would be
understanding of the flexibility I would need for my job. I have ample free time during the week and the weekend to devote to
meetings, phone calls, strategy sessions, etc.
