From an early age giving back to my community has been an important part of my life. Being able to serve as a council member would allow me to use my skills, life experiences, and enthusiasm for building community connections to ensure our city stays viable and competitive without compromising the values that make St. Anthony a great place to live, work, and play. It's why my wife and I chose to live here and have planted the roots for our family to grow. During my campaign for City Council in 2023, I knocked on doors and talked to Villagers almost every day for several months, hearing their concerns, and their love for our community only strengthened my commitment to be a part of our city council. Most recently I ran for city council in St, Anthony. As I mentioned above, knocking on doors and talking to residents about concerns, the future of our community, and my commitment to that future. Although I came in third in that race, I received more votes than a majority of City Council members who have served St. Anthony in the last 20 years. Seriously running for any office takes a lot of commitment and sacrifice, but I believe it shows the level of dedication a person will give after the election as well. I have been regularly active in the SOSA (South of St. Anthony) neighborhood group for many years. Working with my neighbors on formal issues, like the proposed apartments at the former Lowry Grove Mobile Home Park by Brad Hoyt, or more fun activities like our annual easter egg hunt. Although the SOSA neighborhood is continually active and contains a sizable portion of the city’s population, there are currently no council members living in that area. In February of 2023, Council Member Bernard Walker approached me to ask if I would help reestablish the St. Anthony Area Chamber of Commerce as a functional working organization. Since that time, I have joined the board, the organization has a full board, hired staff, and has held several events around the city. In 2021 I started playing baseball with the St. Anthony Codgers as part of the Minnesota 50+ baseball league. Playing the outfield for the Codgers I have had the pleasure of representing the city on baseball fields across the metro area What skills or personal qualities do you possess that would make you valuable as a council member? Throughout my adult life, I have sought out leadership positions. Positions where I can build partnerships, use my problem- solving skills, and always with an eye to building community spaces where others can shine. Of all the qualities I possess I believe it's my ability to remain calm, assess a situation, and work to find solutions that have driven my personal and professional life. Growing up in a diverse, low-income city area in Detroit, in a single-parent home I come to issues with a viewpoint shaped by my life, a viewpoint that is different from other Villagers. It’s through this lens that gives me a unique perspective on how the issues decided by the council may impact those least likely to have a voice in those decisions. It’s this position in life that has taught me the importance of inclusion, meeting people where they are at, and the importance of community outreach to ensure everyone has a place at the table. How does your background add value to your role as a council member? In 1990 I volunteered on my first political campaign, Congressman John Dingell’s reelection effort, it was there that I met people who were very involved in their community and not just in a political sense, I wanted to be involved too, and the route I chose was through the political process. It was at that time I began to reflect on my life and the options I had growing up and how different things could have been for me, had it not been for the people and community that surrounded me in Southwest Detroit, MI. I was suddenly seeing for the first time where my life had taken me was not just a random series of events, but a strong effort on the part of many people and institutions that laid a path for me to follow. I’ve seen firsthand the impact communities can have when people come together. I was raised by my mother and grandmother, both of whom had strong beliefs in giving back to the community. From this early foundation, I internalized their words and actions by engaging in a political and government career so that I could be a part of positive change. Since then, my life has been filled with opportunities to work with everyone from Presidents to those living on the fringes of our society, and I learned that everyone has value and something to contribute when given the opportunity. Through my work with elected officials across the state and region as well as my work with the Minnesota House of Representatives, I have a great working knowledge of the legislative process at every level. My experience in this area will benefit the city in getting resources from and navigating the county, state, and federal government. I have a proven track record of community building that has directly impacted underserved communities in every leadership position I have held. During my time as Keith Ellison’s campaign manager for his first congressional race we created and executed a plan to organize the then relatively new Somali community in Minneapolis. That investment in resources led to thousands of new voters that have continued to grow in numbers and influence. In 2016 I became the sixth Executive Director of the Harrison Neighborhood Association in only a two-year span. The majority of the board were white homeowners, a very different demographic than those who lived in the community. When I left the organization in 2018 a majority of the board were renters, and 3 of the 4 executive committee members were African American. Most recently since becoming the Community Partnership manager with Metro Meals on Wheels I have expanded meal distribution to underserved communities through partnerships with several Muslim organizations, organizations serving the South Asian Community, and creating the first Meals on Wheels program exclusively serving veterans in the United States. St. Anthony Booster Soccer - I served as the President for 2.5 years, which include 3 seasons. As President, I established the yearly kick-off soccer jamboree fundraiser, started the youth referee training program, and increased registration numbers every single year. I also coached multiple teams, recruited coaches, and won the MYSA Competitive Coach of the Year award for 2022. During my administration, our travel program won multiple league titles at all age groups. As President, I was part of the interview panel and helped to select our current SAVHS Boys Soccer varsity coach. I was also responsible for creating a budget for the program. SAVHS Boys Soccer – As an assistant coach, I work towards creating a united soccer front, finding ways to get the new soccer club, high school team, Boosters soccer and Kicks on the same page. I also ran portions of practice, pre-game warmups and gave feedback throughout practice and games. St. Anthony Village Soccer Club – I am the Director of Coaching and a cofounder. I held multiple community discussion meetings regarding the viability of starting the club. I have successfully recruited coaches from outside the community to help start the club. I worked with other community soccer programs to partner and help start our club. Voyageurs- I participated in the monthly father/child excursions the organization had prepared. This was a great opportunity for me to meet members of the community. What skills or personal qualities do you possess that would make you valuable as a council member? •Education. I have a BS in Economics and a BA Political Science with an emphasis in psychology and education. My first job offer out of collage was for government administration at the Gerald R Ford building in Grand Rapids MI. •Open minded - I consider myself to be pretty moderate in my viewpoints. I was taught to understand the source and implications of information before making decisions. In my day-to-day business, I am asked to collaborate often with people from different industries and backgrounds. •Decisive - I have the ability to speak directly and allow my viewpoint to be heard without confusion. •Engaging the Community - I have experience gathering the community to discuss different viewpoints, leading discussion that ultimately led to action. As Boosters Soccer President, I learned the incredible value of simply being available and being responsive to questions/concerns. How does your background add value to your role as a council member? I grew up in Grand Rapids, MI. I have seen the incredible growth of a small community to a medium sized city. I learned about civic involvement and leadership from my father, through his work in the Air Force and a teacher (including as the Union leader). I have been involved as a volunteer in community programs and school districts in each place I have lived. I have five children (two of which are considered foster children) with my wife; all of our children are in the St. Anthony school district. Along with the knowledge in Dentistry, I have Continuing Education in nutrition, and have worked to promote healthy lifestyles in the community. I have worked with patients one on one for over 40 years, developing listening skills, trust, patience, integrity, compassion and friendships. I take great pride in being an honest, hardworking and a reliable person. I believe these same skills would be valuable to any council member to solve the needs of the City and St. Anthony citizens which come before the council. How does your background add value to your role as a council member? Besides my role as a clinician in our Dental Practice, (in which my husband and I built from the ground up), I am also the Office Manager. I know the value of treating employees well, some having been with us for 20 to 30 years. I have had to research and solve business issues that arise, including always being fiscally responsible. My background in living here for over 55 years, gives me the historical perspective of how St. Anthony has grown to be the desirable place it is today. As a small business co-owner, I have experience with financial and accounting areas including bookkeeping, payroll, and budget matters.
