City of Falcon Heights
S City Council Minutes
August 23, 2000
The meeting was called to order by Mayor Gehrz at 6:30 p.m.
PRESENT: Gehrz, Hustad, Kuettel, Lindstrom, Talbot. Also present: Heather
Worthington, City Administrator
COMMUNITY FORUM: There was no one present wishing to speak.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes of August 9, 2000 were approved.
Councilmember Talbot moved to approve the following consent agenda. The motion
passed unanimously.
1. General disbursements and payroll
2. Appointment of Andy Schippel as a firefighter
POLICY AGENDA:
• Approval of wage increase for election judges, from $5.25 per hour to $6.00 ep r hour
Administrator Worthington indicated that other communities in the metropolitan area
were paying up to $6.50 per hour for election judges and the city of Falcon Heights had
not approved a wage increase in several years. After brief discussion, councilmember
Lindstrom moved to approve a $.75 per hour raise for election judges for both elections
in 2000. This will bring it to a more competitive level for recruiting and retaining
election judges in the future. The motion passed unanimously.
Consideration of a variance request to allow housing in a B-2 zoning area located at 1750
W. Larpenteur Ave.
Administrator Worthington explained that Don Hermes of Hermes Floral requested a
variance in the zoning code in order to allow housing on his property at 1750 W.
Larpenteur which is zoned B-2, limited business. Worthington said state statute prohibits
the granting of a variance unless the owner can show that a hardship exists and denial of
such a variance would not substantially diminish or impair property values or
improvements in the area. After discussion, a motion to adopt resolution 00-17 denying
the granting of a use variance was made by councilmember Kuettel. The motion passed
unanimously.
•
