6L <br />Fire Department Training Bonus <br />1.0 Probationary Period <br />a. All appointments for regular, full-time and part-time employees are subject to a <br />six-month training and evaluation period. If during the first 180 days of service in <br />a position, a person has not demonstrated an acceptable level of ability, aptitude, <br />and performance for the position assigned, they will be removed from service. <br />Department heads will recommend to the City Council whether to retain an <br />employee prior to the end of the employee's training and evaluation period. <br />Nothing within this provision alters the status of the "at -will" relationship <br />between the employee and the City of Hugo during the probationary period. As <br />such, the employee may be terminated at any time, for any lawful reason, at any <br />time during his/her employment with the City, including during the probationary <br />period. <br />b. Firefighter Probationary Period and Responsibilities: Every employee hired to the <br />Department shall serve up to 24 -month probationary period, during which time <br />the Department's leadership will evaluate his or her ability, motivation and <br />performance as a firefighter. The probationary period shall begin on the day that <br />an employee first reports for a scheduled drill at the direction of the Chief or <br />designated supervisor and continue for 24 months. A new employee remains <br />subject to probationary status until City Council's approval of the Fire Chiefs <br />written recommendation, after the employee has completed the probationary <br />period. In making this determination the Chief shall consider the following: <br />• Attendance and completion of Firefighter Orientation <br />• Passing of the Firefighter I Course and pass the FFI State Certification <br />Test <br />• Passing of the Firefighter II course <br />• Passing of the EMR course and passing of the National Registry Test <br />• Familiarity with Department policies and equipment. <br />At the recommendation of the Fire Chief, the length of the probationary period <br />may be reduced based upon an employee's qualifications as listed above. A <br />probationary period will not be shorter than 12 months. <br />If the Chief decides a firefighter has not successfully met all requirements, the <br />Chief may request removal of the employee from the Department. The Council <br />shall consider the Chief s recommendation and make a determination on the <br />employee's continued service. <br />c. Training Bonus: With the successful completion of the probationary period, an <br />employee becomes eligible for a training bonus. After the probationary period <br />
