RESOLUTION 2007-19 <br />RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING APRIL 129 2007 AS DRUG ABUSE <br />RESISTANCE EDUCATION (D.A.R.E.) DAY IN MINNESOTA <br />Whereas: <br />Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) is a prevention and education program that <br />teaches young people ways of resisting peer pressure to experiment with drugs and <br />alcohol; and <br />Whereas: <br />D.A.R.E. targets young people when they are most vulnerable to peer pressure, and <br />teaches the skills to make positive decisions, as well as resist the pressure to engage in <br />negative and violent behaviors; and <br />Whereas: <br />Over 25 million students have been reached worldwide and approximately 100,000 <br />Minnesota students are touched annually; and <br />Whereas: <br />The D.A.R.E. curriculum helps students understand self-image, recognize and manage <br />stress without taking drugs, evaluate risk-taking behavior, resist gang pressure, apply <br />decision-making techniques, evaluate the consequences of the choices available to them, <br />discover ways to handle conflict, and learn friendship skills; and <br />Whereas: <br />The D.A.R.E. program has achieved outstanding success, teaching positive and effective <br />approaches to two of the most difficult problems facing our young people today — drug <br />abuse and violence. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, I TIM PAWLENTY, Governor of Minnesota, do hereby <br />proclaim Thursday, April 12, 2007, to be: <br />D.A.R.E.
