Part 5. Incentive Project Funding Q p010
Project Title: Community Education on Green Building Methods at the
Hanifl Shelter
Target Area: Greening Our Community: encouraging sustainable building
in Hugo AND Green Building
Description of Proposed Project:
The City of Hugo is home to the Hanifl Fields Athletic Park which is home to 6 soccer
fields and will be the location of several annual athletic tournaments. On an average
summer night, the park is used by approximately 300 park -goers. In the next year, with
tournaments and events planned to be held, it is estimated that over 6,000 guests will
visit the Hanifl Fields Athletic Park.
A Sub -Committee planned the design of the shelter which is being constructed at the
Hanifl Fields Athletic Park. The LEED rating system was used as a guide to incorporate
"green" systems and building strategies into construction of the shelter. Among the
features and strategies included are: recycling of site demolition waste materials,
lowering demands on water through the use of rain barrels, planting of natural grasses,
use of a hi -efficiency heating system, and use of recycled -content building materials.
The shelter includes a gathering room which was built to provide an opportunity for
environmental classes.
This incentive project will give park visitors the opportunity to learn about the green
elements included at the site. A message center, which is made from recycled plastic,
will be installed outside of the shelter to provide educational opportunities to all park
visitors. Signs will be incorporated in the landscaping which point out the rain gardens,
rain barrels, and native plantings and explains their role in our environment. Also, a
bulletin board and presentation cabinet (includes dry -erase board/presentation screen)
will be installed inside of the building for use in classroom settings.
Estimated Cost of Incentive Project: $ 12,050
Outdoor Bulletin Board in the Gathering Room
Presentation Cabinet in the Gathering Room
Outdoor Message Center
Individual Education signs (3)
Lavatory System made from recycled materials (2)
TOTAL
$ 850
$ 2,000
$ 2,500
$ 900
5,800
$ 12,050
