Background Memo <br />I. Approve Minutes From September 14, 2011 Meeting <br />Staff recommends approval of the minutes from the September 14, 2011 Parks <br />Commission meeting. <br />II. Report on Tour de Hugo <br />The Tour de Hugo was held on Saturday, September 17 at Hanifl Fields Athletic <br />Park. It was a chilly morning but there were 50 excited participants in the family- <br />oriented bike ride. The majority of the people chose to ride the 18 mile course <br />and they enjoyed the scenery eastern Hugo offered. There was a check point at <br />Withrow Elementary sponsored by Postal Credit Union. After returning to Hanifl <br />Fields Athletic Park, riders enjoyed a lunch by Cadillac Diner and warming up by <br />the bonfire. Kinder Gardens sponsored bike decorating crafts and an award was <br />given for the best decorations. Other major sponsors included SNAP Fitness, <br />Oneka Chiropractic, and Boyd's Promos. Feedback from the riders included that <br />they liked the goodie bags and T-shirts and thought it was a fun, relaxed ride. <br />The sponsors and organizers would like to hold the Tour de Hugo again in 2012. <br />III. Update on Irish Avenue Park Committee <br />Staff will present information about the first Irish Avenue Park Planning <br />Committee meeting held on Wednesday, October 5. Committee members Jim <br />Taylor, Dave Strub, Tom Weidt, Scott Anderson, Rick Gwyn, Rhonda Peterson, <br />and Beth Minor listened to a presentation from Dave Percival and Gary Wilson. <br />Percival and Wilson shared their vision for a cross country course and the option <br />of holding the University of Minnesota's Griak Invitational as well as high school <br />and other meets. Staff presented information on the number of ball fields, <br />hockey rinks, etc that could fit on the 125 acre property. Also, park plans for 100 <br />acre parks were shown. <br />Discussion of the committee included improvements that may need to be made <br />to accommodate the proposed cross country course such as irrigation, drainage <br />adjustments, grading, grass deeding, parking lots, and road improvements. The <br />representatives from the neighborhood shared that they want portable restrooms <br />in the interim, continued grooming of ski trails in the winter. They were <br />concerned with bow hunting and ATV use on the property. Parks Chair Jim <br />Taylor shared the commission's vision of Irish Avenue Park including ball fields <br />and other facilities that would ensure a viable recreation department in the future. <br />-2- <br />Parks Commission <br />October 12, 2011 <br />
