Background Memo
Approve Minutes From June 13, 2012 Meeting
Staff recommends approval of the minutes from the June 13, 2012 Parks
Commission meeting.
II. Lions Park Master Planning Update
The first stakeholder meeting to plan Lions Park was held on Wednesday, July
11. Discussions included needs for events held by the Hugo Lions Club, skate
park, play area, trail connections, creating a sense of place with a park entrance,
possible themes, winter appeal and more. Stakeholders outlined how the park
shall be used in the future and discussed what that may mean for the site.
A stakeholder meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, August 8 from 5:30-7:30pm
(Prior to the Parks Commission meeting). Stakeholders will discuss 3 master
plan options and provide feedback.
III. Presentation by Tori Gabrielson
A teenager that lives in the residential neighborhood north of the Hugo Fire Hall,
wrote a letter to the editor which was in the Citizen Newspaper regarding a teen
hang out in their neighborhood. Gabrielson has sent information and will make
presentation to the ParksCommission.
The neighborhood north of the Fire Department, according to the Parks Plan, is
served by Victor Square Park, Arbre Park, Val Jean Park, and Clearwater Creek
Park. As residential development continues in the service area, it is likely that
additional parks and connections to parks will be developed.
The extension of the Hardwood Creek Trail south to 140th will provide a direct,
walkable, connection from Gabrielson's neighborhood to Lions Park.
Washington County has acquired the property for the trail extension.
Washington County intends to plan and design the trail in 2013 and construct the
extension in 2014.
IV. Recreation Program
A report on Park Play Days will be presented. Upcoming Recreation programs
will be discussed including the Skyhawks Sports Camps, Kidcreate Studio's Art
Camps, the Tour de Hugo and Movie Night in the Park.
-2-
Parks Commission
August 8, 2012
