HARDWOOD CREEK REGIONAL TRAIL MASTER PLAN
TRAIL SEGMENT #12 DETAIL DESCRIPTION AND ALIGNMENT INFORMATION (1 OF 2)
SEGMENT DESCRIPTION / OVERALL CHARACTER
The proposed Hardwood Creek Regional Trail continues south along Fenway Avenue following the existing city trail
alignment down to its current termination point at 130th Street. The trail remains 10 feet wide and consistent with regional
standards. There are only two at -grade crossings encountered, with at 132nd Street and one at 130th Street. In each of these
cases, the City and County will coordinate roadway markings and signage treatments consistent with MN DNR and Mn/DOT
standards. As shown on the aerial, the proposed trail continues southeast through an open space area until it makes its way
back to the railroad corridor, at which point it heads south again following the railroad/Falcon Avenue corridor.
DEVELOPMENT ISSUES, CONSTRAINTS AND ENHANCEMENT OPPORTUNITIES
The segment of trail that runs through the open space will require the use of boardwalk in select locations. To the extent
possible, this will be minimized to control costs. (Refer to Trail Design Standards, Features, and Amenities on page 60
for a graphic illustration of a boardwalk.) Limited space between the street and active railroad tracks along the segment
of trail following the railroad/Falcon Avenue corridor will likely have some impacts on ditch -type wetlands and areas of
natural vegetation, each of which require varying levels of mitigation as part of development of the trail. There will also
be a host of issues related to the placement of the trail adjacent to an active rail line that will have to be addressed, most
namely maintaining a minimum
separation between the two.
(Refer to Active Railroad
Corridor Alignment Design
Factors and Cross -Sections
on page 54 for additional
information on this segment of
trail.)
RIGHT-OF-WAY AND PRIVATE
PROPERTY FACTORS/
ALTERNATIVE ALIGNMENTS
The segment of trail that
follows the railroad/Falcon
Avenue corridor will require a
right-of-way agreement with the
BNSF railroad in areas where
the trail encroaches within its
right-of-way.
I
existing city trail will become the regional trail.
Washington
County
trail would be located on the east (right) side of
the road
(Above) As illustrated,
the trail will traverse
through an open space
as it makes its way from
Fenway Avenue back to
the railroad corridor.
50
