2015 Program Update: Snow Jam TO: City of Hugo Parks, Recreation and Open Space Commission FROM: Shayla Syverson, Parks Planner DATE: December 5, 2014 for the meeting of December 10, 2014 1 INTRODUCTION The Snow Jam has not been successful in recent years. It was started in 2010, but has not grown in popularity like other recreation programs. Currently, there is not sufficient volunteer support. In 2014, the program had a loss of over $1,800. Registration and participation has been lacking. Staff is looking for input and ideas on a more successful program. 2 2014 SNOW .IAM BUDGET Food and Supplies $250 Custodial/Building Costs $260 Inflatables $1,400 DJ $450 Sponsorships $450 Advertising 250 Registrations 343 EXPENSES $2,610 REVENUE $793 =-$1,817 3 ISSUES • Participants are typically 4-7 years old. The advertised age is 1-10, but older kids and young toddlers to not typically attend. It is possible that the program does not appeal to a wide enough age group. • In 2014, there were 70 kids with 14 of them being free due to relationship with a volunteer. In 2013 there were 57 paying kids. In 2012, there were 102 kids. In 2011, there were 81 kids. Attendance did not increase with additional paid advertising or via word-of-mouth. • Volunteer support has not been sufficient. Ten volunteers are needed to run the event. Apple Academy provided volunteers in 2012, 2013, and 2014. Participation is inconsistent. Creative Kids Academy provided volunteers in 2011. In 2010, four teenagers operated the inflatables. Building Supervisors have been hired to fulfill the need in the past. • Sponsors are consistent but not involved. • The only profitable year was 2012. • Saturday mornings may not be suitable for some families. • Snow Jam could possibly conflict with other events. The PTA Winter Carnival is held in February, which is similar. Snow Jam December 10, 2014 1
