Sergeant Johnson and Deputy Peulen received the Life Saving Award for quick and responsive action, which led to saving a Hugo resident's life in February 2016. I am taking this opportunity, on behalf of the Washington County Sheriff's Office, to thank the citizens of Hugo for their generous support, donations, and assistance. Over the past several weeks, citizens have sent letters, donated food, assisted us with information, sent emails, and thanked deputies for their service. All of this effort is greatly appreciated and means a lot to us. Sadly, the events in this country once again demonstrate the profound dangers law enforcement deal with on a daily basis. Law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day to confront crime and violence in our community. They do this because they took an oath to safeguard our fellow citizens. They have pride, believe in the oath, and they feel an allegiance to the citizens they protect and the community they serve. Understanding recent challenges, we call on the community to continue to work with law enforcement to address issues of mutual concern, identify solutions, modify rhetoric, and ensure a safer community for our citizens, employees, and visitors.
