NEW CITY HALL DESIGN
NEW CITY
TO BE PRESENTED AT CITY
HALL
COUNCIL MEETING
VITAL
The next step in the process of building Hugo's new City Hall will take place when STATISTICS
the final design is presented at the City Council meeting on Monday, February 5,
2001 at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall. The public is encouraged to attend this meeting
to see the presentation by the engineering and architectural firm of Bonestroo, Location: Downtown Hugo,
Rosene,Anderlik and Associates. Bob Russek, chief architect for the firm, explains directly east of the current City
that the design will consist of three parts: Hall, across Fitzgerald Avenue
• Architectural component — floor plan of the building both internally and
on the site, as well as the finishes Square footage: 13,100 sq. feet
• Structural design—walls, rooms, and footings (11,600 on main floor; 1,500 in
• Mechanical and electrical design—plumbing, heating, and lighting basement)
The design calls for the City Hall to be 13,100 total square feet, with 11,600 feet Cost: $1,030,000 for construc-
on the main floor and a 1,500 square foot basement. The total cost of the build- tion; $1,530,000 total cost
ing is budgeted at $1,530,000, which includes:
• Construction -- $1,030,000 Cost per square foot:: $78.63
• Site work-- $50,000 for construction, $116.79 for
• Design contingency, for adding additional features as the plan is completed total cost
-- $100,000
• Furnishings -- $100,000 Expandable in three directions:
• Project contingency, a safety factor to guard against economic factors such east, west, and south
as rising prices, availability of labor, and energy costs -- $150,000
• Development costs, including architecture, engineering, testing (e.g. soil
borings, structural testing), and site surveys -- $100,000 Built for the Minnesota climate:
pitched roof, under-floor heat-
The cost per square foot is therefore estimated to be $78.63 for construction costs ing ducts, air conditioning,
and$116.79 for the total cost. City Council member Chuck Haas wants the pub- basement suitable as storm shel-
lic to be aware that the City will not be raising residents' property taxes to pay for ter. City Council Chamber and
the new City Hall. He states, "Given the economic growth of our community,we Community Meeting Room
anticipate that our property tax revenue will double in the next five years, just like Masonry construction
it's doubled in the last five years. In essence, the development that is causing the
need for a new City Hall is going to pay for it."
