From: shipping
Sent: Tuesday, February 28, 2017 6:34 AM
To: 'Michele Lindau'
Subject: FW: LIQUOR LICENSES
From: shipping
Sent: Tuesday, February 28, 2017 6:32 AM
To: 'Michele Lindau'
Cc: HugoCityCouncil; Bryan Bear
Subject: RE: LIQUOR LICENSES
Michele, thank you for getting back to me. I really hope that the City Council will consider this! It is not saturation if you
have 4 or 5 different restaurants promoting different food items and drink specials, but when you have 2 or 3 different
liquor stores selling the same thing in a small community and one of them happens to have corporate money to buy
bigger and better deals it really becomes an unfair advantage for the small guy. Small business is what makes our City
great. I believe that there is not one person sitting on the City Council that would like to go and work for free every day
and wonder how you are going to pay your bills. That is what happened to Rick and myself when On The rocks opened
and unfortunately Rick is the one that had to close after being opened for all of those years. If someone from the City
Council would like to sit and talk in person about this and really understand from an owners perspective how the liquor
industry runs and why it is such a tough industry to make a living in, please feel free to give me a call at 651-270-1209.
This is something that needs to be done whether I am an owner or someone else is the owner of a local liquor store in
our great City of Hugo. lust a note, I go work a regular job at 5:30am Monday— Friday and go work the store most nights
and weekends. I do this because it is such a cut throat industry and we only have 2 liquor stores in town. It was really
tough when there were 3 liquor stores within a mile of each other. Hope to hear from someone and have yourself a
great day!!!
Thank You,
Terry Sager — Sagers Liquor
651-270-1209
From: Michele Lindau fmailto:MLindautatici.hugo.mn.us]
Sent: Monday, February 27, 2017 4:32 PM
To: shipping
Cc: HugoCityCouncil; Bryan Bear
Subject: FW: LIQUOR LICENSES
Hello Terry,
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I totally understand your concerns. To restrict the number of licenses would
require an ordinance amendment approved by the City Council. I am forwarding this to the them, but I can tell you that
the Council has never been in favor of regulating competition among businesses in the past, and I do see saturation of
business all over in other communities too. No liquor license has been applied for at the old Rick's Liquor location. I will
let you know if one comes in.
Michele Lindau
Hugo City Clerk
651-762-6315
