At time of adoption, the State of Minnesota gave
every municipality and county the option to adopt the"Building Codes". Today, except
for a few counties and Cities, the State Building Code is enforced throughout the State of
Minnesota. The City of Hugo is one of the Cities that have adopted the codes.
Every three years, the building codes are carefully reviewed and hopefully improved with
emphasis placed on codes related to fire, life and safety, and to keep current with
construction technologies and practices. As a result, every three or four years the State of
Minnesota, including the counties and cities that have adopted the codes are required to
adopt the new codes. For example, in 2003, The State, and the City of Hugo adopted the
2003, International Building Code (IBC), which replaced the 1997 Uniform Building
Code. Now the State and the City(through formal City Council action) must adopt the
2007 State Building Code, which includes the 2006 International Building Code.
