The LPH Grant supports core functions of government. It is one of the state's main investments in the
local public health system and services mandated by the Local Public Health Act.
The LPH Grant is unique from other state and federal funding because it provides local governments local
control to direct dollars where they are needed most in their communities.
Support and Opposition:
This funding increase was a priority item for the Local Public Health Association of MN, the Association of
MN Counties and the Minnesota Inter -County Association.
Previous Consideration:
In 2017 HF614 and SF1144 were introduced.
No Action:
If additional funding is not provided, either local capacity diminishes or property taxes must rise.
A significant investment in the LPH Grant is needed to ensure local public health agencies have the
capacity to respond to the public health needs of their communities.
Financial Implications:
Investing in prevention and local public health pays off by saving health care and other public program
costs, such as those from corrections and child protection. Local tax levies are the single largest funding
source for local public health in Minnesota.
Contact Persons:
Lowell Johnson, Director
Public Health and Environment
651-430-6725
LowelLJohnson@ co.washingon.mn.us
27
David Brummel, Deputy Director
Public Health and Environment
651-430-6662
David.Brummel@co.washineton.mn.us
