No Action:
If no action is taken by the Legislature, official government records and documents will continue to
preserve regardless of the format or media the records is part of. Counties and other governmental
entities would be allowed to manage their electronic documents as they feel is appropriate and legal.
Financial Implications:
If the law was changed to require Washington County to retain all email for a period of three years, the
county estimates our costs to be an additional $350,000 to $500,000 for new hardware, software and
personnel to manage the increased storage. Additional resources would also be needed to manage the
increased work to fill data practices requests.
Contact Persons:
Renee Heinbuch, Director
Information Technology Department
651-430-6421
Renee.Heinbuch@co.washin,gton.mn.us
30
Rick Hodsdon, Assistant County Attorney
County Attorney's Office
651-430-6119
Rick.Hodsdonif ico.washinton.mn.us
