Steve Massey, Forest Lake Area Schools
Superintendent, presented information on the 2018 Operating Levy Referendum and answered
questions from the Council. Massey explained they were looking to increase the voter approved
levy by $825 per pupil. This was largely due to a$25,000 gap in state funding. He said all
districts have this gap and they face it by increasing their levy. The Forest Lake voter approved
referendum had not been increased in 12 years. Instead, they have cut their budget by $7.5
million in the past four years. If approved, money would be spent on lowering class sizes,
restoring previous cuts and reductions, and restoring services for struggling students and
programs for advanced and gifted students. Steve stated that if the levy is not approved, the
school board had discussed combining elementary schools, making further reductions in
programs, increasing fees, and reducing staff.
Klein made motion, Petryk seconded, to approve RESOLUTION 2018-29 RECOGNIZING
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE FOREST LAKE AREA SCHOOLS OPERATING LEVY
REFERENDUM.
