Water Conservation
Water conservation programs are intended to reduce demand for
water, improve the efficiency in its use, and reduce the loss and waste
of water. Longterm conservation measures that improve overall water
use efficiencies can help reduce the need for short-term conservation
measures. Water conservation is an important part of water
resource management and can also help utility managers satisfy the
everincreasing demands being placed on water resources.
Minnesota Statutes 103G.291 requires public water suppliers to
implement demand reduction measures before seeking approval to
construct new wells or increase their authorized volumes of water.
Minnesota Rules 6115.0770, require water users to employ the best
available means and practices to promote the efficient use of water.
Conservation programs can be cost effective when compared to
the generally higher costs of developing new sources of supply or
expanding water and/or wastewater treatment plant capacities.
S •L 1 r -
• rJ • }L• 1, M
•rs
;..
