<br />RECOGNIZING THE 10& BIRTHDAY OF JOE (`I .J.) %iARIER
<br />WHEREAS, Joe was born on March 25th, 1919; in the hospital in Minneapolis and has been a
<br />lifelong Hugo resident; and,
<br />WHEREAS, Joe was married to Emma for 36 years and had eight children including seven
<br />boys and one girl, and had countless grandchildren and great grandchildren. Joe Marier has
<br />currently been married to Connie for 39 years; and,
<br />WHEREAS, Joe grew up in a hardworking farm family and has worked at the Hugo Feed
<br />Mill since his early teens. The Feed Mill has been in the Marier family since 1925 and as present
<br />owner, Joe is still involved with the business today; and,
<br />WHEREAS, Joe proudly served in the US Army during WWII and was stationed in Burma,
<br />India; and,
<br />WHEREAS, Joe was the "Ice Man" from 1937-1938, delivering ice to the area residents,
<br />businesses, and bars; and,
<br />WHEREAS, Joe, at the age of 18, joined the Hugo Fire Department and served from 1936-
<br />1978 (42 years). He was elected as Fire Chief from 1948 - 1964; and
<br />WHEREAS, Joe was elected Mayor in 1964 and served a two year term: and,
<br />WHEREAS, Joe has been a lifelong Hugo Legion member and helped with the purchasing of
<br />the lot where the first Legion building was located on 1471h Street; and,
<br />WHEREAS, Joe sold land to the City to allow City Hall to be built where it is today; and,
<br />WHEREAS, Joe volunteered on many City Committees and was instrumental in many
<br />Comprehensive Plan updates, dedicating countless hours to help shape Hugo to be what it is
<br />today; and,
<br />WHEREAS, Joe Marier will be honored by friends and relatives on Sunday, March 24, 2019,
<br />at the Hugo American Legion, in celebration of his 1001h birthday.
<br />NOW, THEREFORE, I, Tom Weidt, Mayor of the City of Hugo, and on behalf of the City
<br />Council and the Citizens of Hugo, honor Joe Marier for his long life and generous contributions to the
<br />community, and wish him many more happy days in the future to share with family and friends. A
<br />On this 181h Day of March, 2019.
