CITY OF HUGO
PARKS COMMISSION MEMO
TO: City of Hugo Parks, Recreation and Open Space Commission
FROM: Shayla Denaway, Parks Planner
SUBJECT: Future Park on Sunset Lake
DATE: October 11, 2019 for the Parks Commission meeting of October 16, 2019
1. INTRODUCTION:
The City of Hugo has three undeveloped parcels of park land on Sunset Lake. The Parks
Commission has started conceptually planning two of the parcels located on the south-
west side of Sunset Lake of approximately 2 acres.
2. BACKGROUND:
At the meeting of October 18, 2018, the Parks Commission approved a park dedication
proposal for The Preserve on Sunset Lake. The proposal included dedication of .93 acres
of land on Sunset Lake adjacent to the .7 acre city -owned parcel. At the time of the
development approvals, there was neighborhood interest in those parcels being developed
into a park. Both the Parks Commission and the City Council included planning the
future park in their 2019 goals.
At the meeting of April 17, 2019 the Parks Commission approved a timeline and
planning proposal from WSB and Associates. The project plan including evaluating the
site and drafting concept plans to identify what could reasonably be constructed at the
park given the site constraints.
The site was evaluated. At the meeting of August 21, 2019, Candace Amberg and Jordan
Gedrose from WSB presented two concepts for a park at Sunset Lake. The Commission
made minor changes and agreed to host a neighborhood meeting to gather input on the
concepts. The concepts included: a 9-10 stall parking lot, vegetative buffers, drop off
and storage areas for canoes/kayak, fishing piers, trails, turf, a future picnic shelter,
portable restroom location, and spots to fish along the shoreline.
A notification letter was sent to 118 nearby property owners. The two concepts were
presented for public review at the meeting of September 18, 2019.
-I-
Future Park on Sunset Lake
October 16, 2019
