To: Honorable Mayor Tom Weidt and Members of the City Council
From: Hugo Fire Department Captain Ross Hoernemann
Date: April 27, 2022
Subject: Bus Donation

This summer the Hugo Fire Department would like to expand our training and explore areas that we do not
normally have the opportunity to receive training on through fire school or other training events.
One area of training that we would like to explore is auto extrication on a school bus. The City of Hugo has two
White Bear Lake School District Elementary Schools along with a third one in the process of being built, a school
bus facility just south of the Fire Station, and many buses transporting students from Hugo to neighboring cities
for school and events.
I have reached out to multiple bus companies and school districts to obtain a bus for us to perform this training
on. First Student Bus Company responded to a letter I sent and they are willing to donate a used 77-passenger
school bus. The Hugo Fire Department will incur the cost to tow the bus from Champlin, MN to Hugo. Twin
Cities Towing and Recovery would tow the bus at their cost of $100.00. The bus extrication training would take
place on Tuesday, August 16, 2022.
Following the extrication, a private company from Wisconsin would pick up the bus to recycle for scrap value.
The Hugo Fire Department would receive approximately $500 for the scrap value of the bus.
The Hugo Fire Department recommends that the City Council authorize acceptance of the donated school bus
from First Student Bus Company for auto extrication training, and also approve the recycling of the donated
school bus for scrap value.
Thank you for your time!
Sincerely,

Ross Hoernemann
Captain for the City Of Hugo Fire Department.
